Computer Centre, IIT Kanpur

Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur

Computer Centre has installed WLAN on 802.11b/g to allow accessing IITK computing resources (Local network and Internet) through the Wireless communication. WLAN employs mobile network access through the Wireless Access Points. Only authorized users can access the IITK network as well as Internet Services.

Computer Centre has started running a DHCP server for academic area network. Now you need not set a specific IP address for your machine, and configure it to get the IP address automatically.

(DHCP will also set other parameters like gateway, subnet mask, etc. automatically.)

Only IITK users authorized to access IITK Network from any place in campus (where the Access Points are installed) using various commercial Wireless Cards (i.e. Cisco, Orinoco, D-Link, Linksys etc.).

In IITK, WLAN is used to provide reliable and proper network connectivity to mobile on-campus users. They can access all servers and applications which they can access from wired structure.

WiFi Access Point Installation Details

In each building we have placed the access point in a place which we felt would be most convenient for mobile users. As of now, we have more than 100 access points in various locations.

If there is any location in any academic building where there are a couple of people using laptops and other WiFi enabled devices, and the signal from the current access point is weak, then CC would be happy to place another access point in that location. Please report such cases to Mr. Navpreet Singh ( This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. ). We are giving the details of locations where we have put WiFi access point.

  • Open the Network Connection Dialog Box and check Wireless connectivity status.
(Here it will give the information about wireless signal strength, connectivity etc.)
Setting for Secured WLAN:
  • Follow the instructions given in this link about how to connect to the Secured Wireless Network:

We advise that for all desktops you continue to configure it with static or permanent IP address, and use dynamic or automatic IP addresses for your mobile devices like laptops.

Having a static IP address helps in diagnosing problems related to networks, and if the configuration is to be done only once in its lifetime, then that effort is worth the benefits. But if the computer is to be moved around, then configuring it every time in a different location is tedious, and only in such situations, dynamic IP address should be used. Your static IP addresses will continue to be allotted through the department CC coordinator.
