Mr. Gunjan Bagla (BT/ME/1978)

Mr. Gunjan Bagla, Founder and Managing Director of Amritt Inc., is a leading name in the USA. Known for his expertise on business development and Asian trade practices particularly Indian, he is credited with the successes of several western companies in India. Often referred to as ‘The India Expert’, he has written extensively offering valuable insights on doing businesses in Asian markets.

His business acumen has helped executives at Boeing, Cisco, Clorox, Covidien, Hewlett-Packard, Kraft, Nordic Naturals, Paramount Farms amongst others. In March 2013, Mr. Bagla was awarded the Exemplar Award from South Asia Studies Association of United States for his outstanding community services to the USA-India causes.


Mr. Gunjan Bagla obtained his B.Tech. degree in Mechanical Engineering from IIT Kanpur and went on to complete his Master’s in Business Administration from the Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville. Beta Gamma Sigma, an international honor society that recognizes business excellence, conferred upon him the Beta Gamma Sigma Award on the successful completion of his Master’s.

He started his career as an engineer at Larsen & Toubro, Bengaluru. Later, he moved to the US and joined a California-based computer manufacturing company ‘Tandon Computer’ as the Director of Program Management. In 1990, he founded and ran integrated enterprise software company named Amber and led it to the top three positions in vertical. Currently, he serves as the Founder and Managing Director, Amritt Inc. The Los Angeles-based management consultancy firm was started in 2004 and since then has helped American, European and Canadian companies to do business in India and other Asian countries.

Mr. Bagla has also served as a consultant and advisor at numerous large and small companies. His experience spans sourcing, technology marketing, software, wireless, e-learning, games, movies, manufacturing, executive level business development in media, automotive, entertainment, advertising agencies, healthcare, telecom, consumer packaged goods. He also has been involved in raising venture capital twice for venture-funded start-ups, including idea lab’s People Link, and Dynamics Direct through his business acumen and extraordinary entrepreneurial skills. From January 2005 to October 2009, he designed and taught the executive workshops on ‘Doing Business in India’ at California Institute of Technology, Pasadena. The workshops were hugely popular and attracted executives from across the US. He also taught at the Thunderbird School of Global Management, Phoenix, Arizona, and travelled across the globe offering workshops to company executives. Being a prominent orator, he has been a keynote speaker at various conferences and events.

Besides being an entrepreneur and a management consultant, he is a highly acclaimed writer known for his book Doing Business in 21st Century India: How to Profit Today from tomorrow’s most exciting Market published by Warner/Hachette Books in July 2008. The book has helped many North American and European investors and entrepreneurs succeed in India by providing valuable insights into business practices in modern India. He continues to write productive articles on global business, specifically those which highlight the ties between India and the US. Some of his influential articles have appeared in several business magazines including Harvard Business Review, the Indian publications Dataquest and Business World, and the American publications Daily Variety, Bloomberg Business Week, Business Pundit, and CIO. He is often quoted for his India expertise in leading national and international magazines and newspapers such as the Financial Times, Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, etc. His blog ‘The India Expert’ has gained him immense popularity. He has been interviewed by many leading channels such as BBC, Fox Business Network, National Public Radio and others.

Mr. Gunjan is a member of the Asia Society and a Charter Member of The Indus Entrepreneurs (TiE). He also serves on the board of the South Asia Studies Association and American Society of Engineers of Indian Origin. He also presided over the Make in India panel at the 14th India Conference at Harvard Business School. He is the former president of the Alumni Association of IIT Kanpur and past president of Pan IIT USA (2009-2011).
