Dr. Udai Pratap Singh

Dr. Udai Pratap Singh (BT/CE/1972)

Dr. Udai Pratap Singh is an ardent advocate and practitioner of environmentally sound and sustainable infrastructure practices. He spent his entire professional career with CH2M HILL, USA, and handled some of the toughest water resource and environmental issues. His work won several awards and appreciation including highest ratings from the US Environmental Protection Agency.

He is also a founding member of the Environmental and Water Resources Institute (EWRI) and became the first Indian-American elected by EWRI of American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) as President to lead the profession in USA. In 2009, IIT Kanpur conferred upon him the Distinguished Alumnus Award for his outstanding contributions to environmental and civil engineering. He is also the recipient of the IIT Kanpur West Coast Alumni Leadership Award for a successful track record of engineering and project management.

Dr. Singh obtained his B.Tech. degree from IIT Kanpur in 1972 and subsequently received graduate degrees in water resources engineering from Clemson University and in environmental engineering from the University of Florida, USA. Dr. Singh’s research work on the feasibility of deep well disposal of treated waste water effluent was the basis for setting up the largest deep well injection facility in the US during the late 1970s. The same technology was successfully pilot tested by USA and European countries during the 1990s to capture and store carbon dioxide in deep geological formations, and is now being used as an option for mitigating global climate change. His work in the areas of underground injection, combined sewer overflow and stormwater management, and hazardous waste investigation/remediation has strongly influenced policy issues and decisions within the US Environmental Protection Agency.

In April 1974, he joined CH2M HILL also known as CH2M, a global engineering company handling infrastructure and natural resource challenges, as a water resource engineer in Florida. During his 40-year long association with the group, he held several key portfolios as project and program manager, client service manager and vice president, and helped clients solve water resource and environmental issues. In 1984, he transferred to the firm’s San Francisco Bay Area office to manage US Environmental Protection Agency’s highest priority Superfund site in EPA Region 9. In December 2014, he retired from the company as the Vice President. In 2015, Dr. Singh founded and is the principal of a company called US Environmental Services.

Dr. Singh is also a prolific writer having published 60 technical papers in the field of environmental and water resources engineering. He has co-authored a book entitled Hazardous Waste Site Remediation Management, published by Water Environment Federation (WEF); and has edited seven books on environmental engineering. He has been an Advisor to the Water Caucus of the United States Congress (House of Representatives) and has led US environmental and water resources delegations to a dozen countries. Currently he has key leadership positions in ASCE and ACECC (Asian Civil Engineering Coordinating Council).
