Mr. Prakash Bare (MT/EE/1992)

Mr. Prakash Bare is one of the most famous actors-cum-producers of the Indian film industry. After having a prolific career as an engineer and technopreneur in the USA, he returned to India to pursue his other passion, acting. He made his film debut in 2010 with the Malayalam film ‘Sufi Paranja Katha’ and since then has portrayed several memorable performances that have won him critical acclaim including the title of ‘the Superstar of offbeat Malayalam movies’. In 2015, he started his production

company Silicon Media under which he has produced numerous national and international award winning films. He feels that acting is an art which enables you to connect with the real society and culture. Being a veteran technopreneur, he is also involved with multiple technology start-ups in India.

Profile

Mr. Prakash received his bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from NSS College of Engineering, Palakkad, Kerala in 1986. Later, he joined the M.Tech. program at IIT Kanpur and completed it in 1992. Following it, he spent 15 years working in the Silicon Valley, USA, as a technologist and an entrepreneur. In 1996, he joined Cypress Semiconductor and worked there for a year. In 1997, he co-founded GDA Technologies Inc., one of the pioneering Electronic Design Services (EDS) companies. The company was listed as one of the fasted growing privately held companies in the USA by the Inc Magazine 2002 in its annual INC500 list. In March 2007, GDA was subsequently overtaken by Rambus Inc. and L&T Technology Services. Mr. Bare joined Rambus Inc. as the Managing Director and served there till August 2011. He then returned to India to pursue his other passion, acting.

Besides his technology interests, Mr. Bare always nursed the dream of performing on stage. During his college days, he was an active theater artist and even won university best actor awards multiple times including Best Actor award in Calicut University Interzone festival. In 2010, he made an acting debut and since then has acted in more than 25 films in Malayalam, Kannada and Marathi. He is best known for his depiction of the poet ‘KP Madhavan Nair’ in Ivan Megharoopan. His other remarkable performance is in the film Oraalppokkam, produced through online crowd funding. He has been very selective in choosing film roles as he only wants to portray challenging characters and work with highly passionate and committed people.

In 2015, Mr. Bare started Silicon Media Productions under whose banner he has produced/co-produced critically acclaimed Malayalam films such as Sufi Paranja Katha, Janaki, Ivan Megharoopan, shutter (Marathi), and Papilio Buddha. The company has won several recognitions including 12 Kerala state awards. Some of his production films have also been selected for reputed film festivals like Berlin, Montreal, BFI, Durban, IFFK, etc.

Mr. Bare’s journey from an engineer to an entrepreneur to being an actor has been very exciting. Gifted with the ability to combine passion and experience and use it to the best of his capacity has been quite rewarding for him on both the personal and the professional front.
