Historically, computer secondary storage has been based on the rotating-platter magnetic disk drive. Future approaches to storage architectures (for example, flash based solid state drives) will have fundamentally different performance characteristics than traditional storage media, and thus invalidate many of the underlying implementation and semantic assumptions of the existing software stack. This RFI concerns itself with how these software components will change to accommodate new storage technologies, and what new software mechanisms will need to be invented to make efficient use of the new media.

Although some petabyte-scale data sources will be tolerant of occasional inaccuracy, unavailability, or outright failure, others will not. Efficiently building ubicomp environments will require next-generation software development tools. Historically, approaches to software development have focused on predictable, single-threaded applications built upon well-defined, thoroughly tested APIs. However, ubicomp will present even greater demands for loosely-coupled, distributed, asynchronous, and dynamically-composable programming methodologies. In a ubiquitous computing (“ubicomp”) environment, users will be immersed in a world of dynamically changing connectivity where remote resources are exploited for a wide variety of services. Current business models—in which users and devices are “bound” to a particular network—are ill-suited for allowing rapid, transparent, and promiscuous access to networks, devices, and services. Economic models that enable the ubicomp service provider to monetize subscribers/usage will drive investment and mass-adoption thereby helping realize the ubicomp vision. Sensors, displays, processors, and other devices play a foundational role in ubiquitous computing (“ubicomp”). All of these will be omnipresent in the near future—with potentially thousands of ubicomp devices interacting with each other within the space of a few meters. With every ubicomp device clamoring for power, decreasing their energy requirements is essential to reducing their size, environmental impact, and operating costs. While significant work is underway in improving battery technologies (which is beyond the scope of this RFI), there is an equally important opportunity to improve the run-time efficiency of these devices through software power management.
