Low cost devices to reduce cases of Neonatal Jaundice

IIT Kanpur has developed a low-cost phototherapy machine to cure neonatal jaundice. The machine has been developed by Prof. S. Anantha Ramakrishna and Prof. Harshwardhan Wanare of the Department of Physics, and Prof. J. Ramkumar of the Department of Mechanical Engineering. These new phototherapy units will make the treatment more efficient by reducing the time duration for irradiation and the treatment cost. The units differ from the common machines in the way that they not only make use of LEDs but also offer well calibrated intensities, wave lengths and uniformity of blue light in an inexpensive manner. The institute gifted three new units to the LLR Hospital. Prof. Abhay Karandikar, Director and Prof. S. Ganesh, Dean of R&D, IIT Kanpur handed over the units to Dr. Navneet Kumar, Principal and Dr. R.C. Gupta, Superintendent, GSVM Medical College, Kanpur.

ASM-HEMT: Advanced SPICE Model for Gan HEMTs

The SPICE model (Titled: ASM- THEMT) developed by Prof. Yogesh Chauhan, Department of Electrical Engineering and his collaborator has been selected as the world's first industry standard model for Gallium Nitride High Electron Mobility Transistor (GaN HEMT) by Silicon Integration Initiative's Compact Model Coalition (CMC). Industry standard models are selected after rigorous evaluation and validation on multiple technologies by the semiconductor industry. This work is an outcome of the last six years' effort of Prof. Chauhan's group. The model will now be available in Electronic Design Automation software and it will be used by major semiconductor and EDA companies worldwide. GaN HEMT is widely used in RF power amplifiers and power electronics applications. GaN HEMTs will be key to design power amplifiers for future 5G technology. The GaN HEMT technology is of special significance to India. Government of India is considering to setup a GaN foundry near Bengaluru. DRDO and ISRO are also actively working on developing this technology for defence and space applications. Prof. Chauhan is working with both of these agencies in developing SPICE models for circuit design using GaN HEMTs.

Vigyan Bus

Vigyan Bus, designed by IIT Kanpur, was inaugurated by the Hon’ble Chief Minister, Shri Yogi Adityanath on May 11, 2018. It is equipped with different instruments for the science experiment. The bus will visit schools in every district in the state where students will get a chance to see science models, projects. The purpose of launching this unique bus is to create awareness regarding science and technology among the students and to popularize science in rural areas.

Centre for Energy Regulation

IIT Kanpur establishes India’s first Centre for Energy Regulation (CER). CER is an endeavour towards comprehensive and sustained institutional strengthening in the Indian power sector. It is an initiative led by the Department of Industrial Management and Engineering. Mr. PK Pujari, chairperson Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC), inaugurated the centre on May 17 at a ceremony held on New Delhi. The aim of the Centre is to strengthen the Indian power sector working closely with key stakeholders particularly the Electricity Regulatory Commissions (ERCs), electric utilities and academia. The Centre and its activities are partly supported by the UK Government through a project on ‘Strengthening Regulatory Research Network in the Power sector’ under the Supporting Structural Reforms in the Indian Power Sector” program.
