Please use either one of emacs or vi (or both) for your editing needs. Lots of tutorials, cheat sheets etc are available on the net on how to use these. In fact for emacs if you just type emacs on the command prompt, it shows a link to a tutorial.
Your computer will have other ``cool'' editors like knotepad kile etc. However remember all cool gals and guys use vi or emacs and you will never atain the heaven of nerdom unless you use one of them.
Dont Panic. Vi can be intimidating at times but soon will be natural.
