Subject: [All] Traffic Etiquette Awarenss Day held on Tuesday, 5th April, 2005

Dear Campus Residents and Visitors,

There has been an increase in rash driving & accidents on our campus roads
recently.  So, the Traffic Etiquette Group organised a Traffic Etiquette
Awareness Day today (Tuesday, 5th of April, 2005).  We believe that the
incidence of rash driving should come down by such sustained education of
the road users.

During this publicity drive (morning and afternoon), road blocks were
placed between the type II crossing and the main IIT gate to stop or slow
down traffic.  At the location, SIS personnel and volunteers approached
all drivers and requested them to follow some basic traffic rules and
etiquette - driving within speed limit, avoiding the use of horn and
perferring to slow down whenever possible, and using low beam (instead of
high beam) when driving at night.

Volunteers also reached out to pedestrians and cyclists at other
locations, especially near Hostel II T-junction, requesting them to keep
to the footpath and within the cycle lane whenever possible.

We, from the traffic etiquette group, do hope that this exercise will have
some impact on the traffic on the campus roads.  We would like to thank
all of you for your cooperation and patience during this exercise.

I would like to express special thanks to Capt. Umesh Chandra and the SIS
for their direct support and involvement in this effort.  The SIS was
extremely professional in executing whatever was required for this
awarenss drive.  Thanks to Mainak Ghosh for the traffic-cartoons, Ashish
Garg for getting the flyers ready, Bhaskaran Raman, Kameswari Chebrolu,
K.S. Prasanna, H. Hemanth and Mukesh Gupta for volunteering their time in
preparing and participating in the publicity drive.  Thanks also to the DD
for the encouragement and arranging funds for xeroxing the hand-bills.
