Project Title: Optimization of Mold Powder for continuous casting of JA69BMQT-05 grade slabs

About the project: Casting powders, or mould fluxes, as they are more commonly known, are used to prevent the sticking of the shell to the mould. In this work, recommendations on the appropriate choice of mould fluxes will be given to a steel manufacturer prior to plant trials, for continuous casting of a particular steel grade. In particular, a new design criterion of mould fluxes based on the combination of crystallisation experiments and thermophysical property determination will be adapted. Additionally, calculations will be carried to understand the interactions between the grade and the mould slag.

Essential Qualification: Ph. D* from a reputed university /institute and an excellent track record and publications /patents in a research area relevant to the sponsored project.

*duration in Ph.D. degree, after three years will be considered as research experience.

Desirable Qualifications: PhD in Engineering

Desirable Skills: Experience with high-temperature experiments, characterisation tools such as XRD, SEM-EDX and thermal analysis using DSC; Basic understanding about the properties of mould fluxes and their role in continuous casting of steel; Exposure to CFD.

Areas of Educational Qualification- Metallurgical Materials Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or related fields.

Salary: INR 65000.00 per month (Consolidated)

Nature of position: Full time, Contractual

Duration of appointment: 1 year.

Nature of work: The successful candidate is expected to perform the following tasks:

  1. High-temperature experiments and thermal characterisation of selected mould fluxes using a melting furnace and a differential scanning calorimetry (DSC).
  2. Determination of thermophysical properties of mould fluxes using models or experiments
  3. Development of a mathematical model for heat transfer in the continuous casting mould including the effect of mould slag layers.

Apart from these, the candidate may have to undertake any work assigned by the PI.

Compensation & benefits: The candidate will get the opportunity to work in a highly motivating and supportive environment and can avail the hostel/family accommodation facility (according to availability) at IIT Kanpur.

How to apply: Interested candidates may directly email to rsarkar@iitk.ac.in with their Resume and copies of relevant certificates by January 24th, 2025.
