Short Course on |
A short course on Seismic Evaluation and Strengthening of Buildings was organized at IIT Kanpur, during 8-12 August, 2005. The course is an activity of National Program on Earthquake Engineering Education (NPEEE) and is attended by 27 teachers of engineering colleges from various parts of the country. In addition, 9 professionals and 1 teacher from Bangladesh are also attending the short course. This course was organized the first time by IIT Kanpur and is next in series of several courses on Earthquake Engineering by IIT Kanpur which have been so popular that they have been conducted several times throughout the country. The topic of seismic evaluation and strengthening is very timely and relevant, because the vast amount of existing building stock have not been designed for earthquake forces and pose serious risk to public safety. Current Indian codes do not address the evaluation of seismic resistance of existing buildings. Further, adequate codal provisions are lacking for strengthening of the structural systems of seismically deficient buildings. An appropriate level of safety needs to be ensured for the occupants of these buildings. The focus of the course is on introducing a consistent and reliable procedure for evaluation of expected performance of a building in earthquakes. This will help identify the various structural deficiencies, not only the type of weakness, but its extent, a quantitative estimate, which will lead the structural engineer to develop a correct strategy of its seismic strengthening. The document was developed by Prof. Durgesh C Rai and his project staff as a part of the project funded by Gujarat State Disaster Management Authority (GSDMA) at IIT Kanpur on building codes. The project was led by Prof. Sudhir K Jain, which saw development of many new codes on earthquake, wind and fire. During the short course, the participant will attend 23 lectures, two tutorials, visit to labs and in the end will take an examination. The short course was inaugurated by Prof. Kripa Shankar, Deputy Director, IIT Kanpur. Prof. Sudhir K. Jain briefed about the achievement of NPEEE and IITK-GSDMA project, whereas, Prof. Bithn Datta talked about various continuing education program that the Dept. of Civil Engg. has been organizing for quality improvement of teachers as well as practicing engineers. The course-co-ordinator, Prof Durgesh C Rai welcomed the participants and briefed them about the course and Prof. CVR Murty proposed a vote of thanks. The course venue is The Pioneer Batch Continuing Education Center, Visitors' Hostel, IIT Kanpur.
