Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur has been committed to excellence in teaching and research. The quality of its graduates has been acknowledged throughout the world. Some its Alumni have become leaders in their respective fields. Persons like Mr. Narayanamurthy have become icons of successful alumni of IIT Kanpur. The faculty of IIT Kanpur have contributed a good deal to the growth of the Institute and have participated in the Nation building in the last four plus decades. They have served as role models for the younger generation. Their contribution through their blood, sweat and tears has yielded rich dividends in the form of quality graduates from IIT Kanpur, who stand shoulder to shoulder with the best in the world. In order to acknowledge the contribution of the faculty and to salute them, IIT Kanpur, in consultation with its students, alumni, faculty and the Board of Governors, instituted Distinguished Teacher Awards for the first time in the year 2002. The awards went to Professors Amitabha Ghosh, K R Sarma and G D Agarwal. The choice of these teachers for the distinction conferred upon them set high standards to follow. The year 2003 saw the selection of Professors G K Lal, H C Verma and Lilavati Krishnan as the Distinguished Teacher awardees. For the current year, based on a large number of nominations received, the Institute committee recommended that the Distinguished Teacher Award for the year 2004 be conferred upon Professor Asok Kumar Mallik of Mechanical Engineering Departemnt, IIT Kanpur. In a simple function held on September 5, 2004 in the Institute’s lecture hall complex, the award was presented to Professor Mallik. While the citation was read by Professor Amitabha Ghosh, the thesis supervisor and mentor of Mallik, the citation, a shawl and a plaque were presented by the Director, Professor S. G. Dhande. IIT Kanpur also honoured about ten of its faculty colleagues,
who have completed 25 years of distinguished service to the Institute
through the presentation of a shawl and a citation. Interestingly, Dr.
Dhande, himself a faculty of member of the Institute, has completed
25 years of service at the Institute, and received the citation and
a shawl from Professor Kripa Shanker, the Deputy Director and a personal
