About the Course

The economic strength of a country is correlated by the growth of its manufacturing industries. Therefore, Manufacturing has become part of the fabric of our country with highlighting on "Make in India" by the government. It is important that technical brain from all disciplines have basic idea about processes involved in making a product. This course aims to teach the basic knowledge about the fundamental manufacturing techniques employed to transfer a raw material into final useful product.

The course will introduce important aspects of casting/ solidification, different joining processes, powder metallurgy, micro fabrication processes and various deformation techniques like forging , rolling, swaging etc. We plan to run this course in Engineering Metallurgy lab of our department (TA201 lab). Each day will start theory about various manufacturing processes that will be followed by working in the lab. At the end of the day, the participants will be able to demonstrate a prototype designed, fabricated and assembled by them.

The main objective of this course is to provide an opportunity to the participants (students/ faculty) to get hands on experience that they usually lack due to absence of infrastructure in their institute as well as to expose them the pedagogy of IIT Kanpur. This course will also help to the faculty members of different institute in planning and setting up the lab in their parent institute in a well-organized manner.

Course Objective

Materials form the backbone of the manufacturing industries. The development of new materials and/or refinement of existing material composition /processing techniques are expected to broaden the diversity of applications of materials in the coming years. Development of new and advanced materials demands innovations in existing manufacturing processes to obtain desired properties in the materials without compromising on the production front. In the above context, this refresher course has been planned to provide an understanding of the fundamentals of materials processing techniques and their use in a range of sectors (automotive, defense and aerospace, cutting tools). In the above broad perspective, the course will have three major objectives to serve:
