About the Program

The Language Programme was established in the early years of IIT Kanpur and acquired a more formal structure during the 1970s. For more than 50 years now, our wide variety of language courses have been helping students widen their intellectual horizons and get better integrated within an international working environment. The programme is organized by the Centre for Continuing Education of IIT Kanpur.

Germany, positioned at the heart of Europe, is a confluence of science, art and philosophy. Additionally, the Germans are known for their discipline, punctuality and precision. Germany has always been known for its engineering precision and technological wizardry. Benz, BMW, Bosch, Daimler, Siemens and many more have made Germany the largest economy in all of Europe. In today’s socio-political landscape, Germany is proving to be a major stabilizing force; with a sensitive heart towards humanitarian and environmental causes.

About 33% population of the European Union speaks German, including countries like Austria, Switzerland, Belgium, Liechtenstein and Luxembourg, where it is the official language.

It is therefore not surprising that the German language is one of the most fervently taught languages in the world today. Although misconstrued as a tough and hard-to-pronounce language, it is in fact a rather melodious one, with clear and strong intonations.

The Germans are proud about their language and are very particular about the pronunciation. There are many dialects, but we will learn Hochdeutsch or standard German, which helps one to watch German films, listen to German Music or podcasts, converse with native speaker.

You will learn the basics of the language along with songs, short films, group activities etc. Some interesting facts about Germany, Switzerland and Austria makes the learning enjoyable.

Stay home, stay safe and upgrade yourself!

FRENCH is spoken in many countries - not just in France! It is the official language in Switzerland, Belgium, Canada, Seychelles, Morocco, Ivory Coast - to name just a few. In fact, it is the only language spoken on all five continents.

The French are very proud of their language and will immediately warm to you if you speak it - even if you make a few mistakes. Since there are no hard consonants in the French language, it is easy on the ear. It is a language of precision and musicality.

At IIT Kanpur, we have a small French library which houses books, magazines, comics (yes, you can read Tintin and Asterix in French !) and CDs.

Our aim is to teach you how to read, write and speak French. It is a language that will open up a host of opportunities - in the tourism industry, hotel management, airlines, international banks, Indo-French collaborations, teaching..... It will help you enjoy French literature and cinema, understand research papers in Mathematics.

Come, discover this language. It will help you relax and have fun, make you multilingual and throw open many doors for you.

What our students say about the program.

Today I feel that I have secured my life in terms of finances and fame and I am known throughout the city of Kanpur from small to big institutions - this is just because of learning French from IIT Kanpur in 2009. I can never never forget what the course has given me.

Learning French from IIT Kanpur has changed my life completely. It has groomed my personality, made me feel confident, it makes me feel different from others and I am a well-respected teacher of French in one of the oldest schools in Kanpur.

Words cannot express what the French language has done for me.

Arpita Murkhe
French teacher
Methodist High School, Kanpur

I was a student at IITK in the 5-year Integrated Masters program in Mathematics from 2001-2006, and took the French language course during the 2004-5 academic year. At the time, I had taken the class out of a fondness for movies of “La Nouvelle Vague”, and how lyrical the language sounded. That year of wonderfully-taught classes helped me deepen that appreciation— and when I finally had a chance to visit Paris in 2011, memories of those classes kept surfacing. At last, I saw the sights and tasted the food and was immersed in a culture that I had previously glimpsed through the books and tapes and stories heard in the French class! Indeed, that introduction to the language and region during my Kanpur days has come back to me in all my subsequent visits to France - it has always been thrilling to converse with someone there, when our only common language was French. After all, it is only during such travel that one realizes that there are large parts of the world where English is rarely spoken, or even understood. And it is only when one has gone through a course like I did, that one understands that there is so much more to a language than what a mere translation would yield (and what a Google app might offer). I consider myself lucky for having signed up for the course, and would always be grateful for this additional lens with which I can view the world and its diverse people.
