Computing has become a major tool in science and engineering so much so that it is often called the third pillar along with experiments and theory. Even outside these fields, almost all aspects of our lives have become automated, and this revolution is being dominantly driven by programmers. During these five days, we will cover basic elements of python programming and then move onto numerical algorithms. We will also cover the Python implementation of these algorithms.
It will not be a purely theoretical course since a major portion of the course will be dedicated to encouraging students to solve problems. Any difficulties in solving the exercises will be addressed through real-time interactions with our teaching assistants.
Features of the course:
No classes on saturday and sunday.
The contents of the course will the divided in 2 parts:
01. Basic elements of programming:
02. Numerical methods:
The students will also get a chance to implement and enhance their understanding of the course by practicing a variety of problems and exercises on all these topics.
Professor, Deptartment of Physics
Professor Mahendra Kumar Verma received his B.Tech. from IIT Madras in Computer Science. After that, he moved to the USA to pursue a Ph.D. in physics at the University of Maryland. In 1994, he joined the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur as faculty. Presently, he holds the Sanjay Mittal Chair as a Professor in the Department of Physics, IIT Kanpur. Prof. Verma is an expert in computational sciences, supercomputing, and turbulence. He and his group have developed large programs such as TARANG and SARAS that can simulate a wide range of fluid flows.
In addition, he is also a recipient of the Swarnajayanti fellowship, INSA Teachers Award, and the A.P.J Abdul Kalam HPC Award.
