Three-day Training Program on Design and Development of 5G/5G+ Standards and Indigenous 5G Network for DoT Officers

 18-20 June 2024

Organized by IIT Kanpur in association with NTIPRIT and TEC, Department of Telecommunications, Govt. of India

Course Organizer

Prof. Rohit Budhiraja
Department of Electrical Engineering
IIT Kanpur

Introduction

A group led by Prof. Rohit Budhiraja at IIT Kanpur, along with other institutions, has recently developed the first indigenous 5G network, funded by DOT. This 5G network is installed, as shown below, in IIT Kanpur campus as well. This 5G technology has recently being transferred to the TATA-Tejas network and CDOT.

Prof. Rohit Budhiraja group at IIT Kanpur has now gained expertise in designing software and hardware for 5G networks. His group is also contributing to the design of 5G+ standard by participating in the 3GPP meetings.

The proposed course will introduce the participants to the 5G physical layer, network architecture, its different network layers, and the way data is transmitted from the base station (BS) to the user equipment (UE). It will then explain in detail how a UE connects to the 5G network when it enters the network for the first time. These ideas will be covered on the first day of the course. The course will also explain the different blocks of 5G physical layer which includes coding, modulation, rate matching, and multiple antenna technologies.

The course will also discuss the different technologies being investigated for the development of 5G+ standard e.g., AI/ML, ambient IoT, positioning. We will also introduce how 5G+ standardization happens, different working groups of the 5G standardization body. The participants will also make multiple visits to the 5G lab to conduct experiments on the live indigenous 5G network. Participants will be able to do multiple experiments on a live 5G network.
