Hydraulics and Water Resources Engineering (HWRE) is a leading consulting and research field of Civil Engineering Department. It is a major group within the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur. Along with academic work it also undertakes projects to address complicated water engineering problems relating to groundwater, hydrology, river flow and flood plain management sediment transport, stratified flow, pipe flow, hydraulic structures, water distribution, climate change and environmental studies.

Our group specializes in applying the of principles of fluid mechanics, hydraulics and hydrology to address a wide range of problems related to water such as:

  • Design of hydraulic structures such as bridges, dams, channels, canals, levees
  • Forecasting of hydrologic extremes such as droughts and floods
  • Irrigation scheduling for optimizing agricultural productivity
  • Integrated management of societal and ecological water needs
  • Water quality management of surface and subsurface water resources
