Backing Ideas on Their
Journey to Enterprise
SIIC
IIT Kanpur’s Startup Incubation and Innovation Centre supports founders from ideation and prototyping through incubation, investment readiness and market access.
Long before India’s startup ecosystem became a national movement, IIT Kanpur began building a place where technical ideas could be tested against the realities of the market. Established in 2000, the Startup Incubation and Innovation Centre has grown into one of India’s most established technology incubators—helping researchers, students and entrepreneurs move from early concepts to products, companies and real-world impact.

Bridging the distance from idea to enterprise
A promising technology is not yet a successful innovation.
A researcher may prove that an idea works in a laboratory. A student may build a compelling prototype. Yet the journey towards a sustainable enterprise requires much more: product refinement, market validation, intellectual-property guidance, funding, specialist talent and access to customers.
Many ideas fail not because the science is weak, but because the ecosystem around the innovator is incomplete. SIIC was created to close that gap.
Building before the ecosystem existed
Established in collaboration with the Small Industries Development Bank of India, SIIC began at a time when organised technology incubation in India was still emerging.
By placing incubation within IIT Kanpur, it connected entrepreneurial ambition with laboratories, faculty expertise, research capabilities and the Institute’s problem-solving culture.
In 2018, its operations were strengthened under the Foundation for Innovation & Research in Science & Technology, a Section 8 company promoted by IIT Kanpur.
Today, SIIC supports ventures from ideation and prototyping to acceleration, investment readiness and market access.
More than a place to work
Technology startups need more than office space. SIIC combines infrastructure with technical and business mentoring, government-supported programmes, funding opportunities, investor engagement and access to IIT Kanpur’s wider research and alumni networks.
Pre-incubation programmes help innovators test ideas. Longer-term incubation supports product and business-model development. Accelerators help selected ventures prepare for deployment, investment and scale.
The ecosystem spans sectors including aerospace, healthcare, agriculture, defence, artificial intelligence, clean technology, advanced manufacturing, biotechnology and cybersecurity.

From research to real-world value
In September 2025, SIIC crossed the milestone of 500 startups incubated. By December 2025, more than 230 ventures were presently incubated, over 50 were being onboarded and the ecosystem included 49 faculty entrepreneurs.
SIIC also helps IIT Kanpur research move beyond publication and proof of concept. Faculty members and researchers receive support in company formation, intellectual-property management, product development and commercialisation.
This is particularly important for deep technology, where a medical device, advanced material, drone platform or agricultural machine may require years of refinement before reaching the market.

The next chapter
After more than 25 years, SIIC has established entrepreneurship as a core expression of IIT Kanpur’s problem-solving culture.
Its next phase will require deeper technical infrastructure, patient capital, stronger market connections and expanded support for ventures addressing national priorities.
The most visible output of an incubator is a startup. Its deeper contribution is the confidence it gives people to act on knowledge—helping ideas travel from laboratories and classrooms into the lives of the people they were created to serve.
