Giving Students a Place to Belong

Hostel Upgradation

The new residential tower within Hall of Residence 16 will expand modern student accommodation and strengthen IIT Kanpur’s residential campus experience.

Through the support of distinguished alumnus Bhadresh K. Shah and AIA Engineering, IIT Kanpur is developing a new residential tower within Hall of Residence 16—creating future-ready accommodation for a growing student community and strengthening the residential experience at the heart of campus life.

More Than a Room on Campus

A student’s education at IIT Kanpur does not take place only in lecture halls and laboratories.

It continues in hostel corridors, common rooms and late-night conversations. Students explain difficult concepts to one another, form teams, discover new interests and build friendships that often last a lifetime.

For many, the Hall of Residence is also where independence first becomes real. It is where students learn to manage time, relationships, responsibilities and ambitions away from home. As IIT Kanpur grows, its residential infrastructure must grow with it.

Creating Room to Welcome Students Well

New schools, research areas and academic programmes are bringing more students and scholars to the Institute. This growth is essential, but it places pressure on the systems that support everyday campus life.

Student housing is among the most important of these.
Safe, dignified and well-designed residences influence academic focus, well-being, belonging and participation in campus life. They also determine whether the Institute can expand without weakening the quality of its residential experience.

The new tower within Hall of Residence 16 will add modern accommodation and support IIT Kanpur’s broader effort to strengthen student housing.

A Contribution Shaped by Engineering and Enterprise

Bhadresh K. Shah graduated from IIT Kanpur with a B.Tech. in Metallurgical Engineering in 1974.

He founded a small foundry in 1976. After early product failures, he changed direction, began supplying components to power plants and gradually built AIA Engineering into a global metallurgical-products company. IIT Kanpur recognised him with its Distinguished Alumnus Award in 2013 for entrepreneurial excellence.

His journey reflects experimentation, resilience and the willingness to keep improving a system until it works better. Through the new tower, that legacy now connects directly with the daily lives of future IIT Kanpur students.

The project also builds on his earlier support for a rooftop solar photovoltaic installation at the Institute, extending a long-standing relationship from sustainability infrastructure to student life.

A Legacy Lived Every Day

Residential infrastructure creates impact through ordinary but formative moments.

A new student arrives and finds a community. A senior helps them adjust. Friends prepare for an examination together. A difficult semester becomes easier because support is close by. A late-night conversation becomes the beginning of an idea or lifelong relationship.

By supporting the new tower, Bhadresh Shah and AIA Engineering are investing in this lived dimension of IIT Kanpur.
A Hall of Residence is not where education pauses at the end of the day. It is where another part of the education continues.
