Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur has been instrumental in bringing new paradigms of science-based, cutting edge engineering education. The Institute has always been at the forefront of teaching and research and gained repute at national and international level. With the path-breaking innovations in both its curriculum and research, the Institute has gained a legendary reputation. Today, the combined record of its past and present faculty and students along with the alumni spread across the world is awe-inspiring.
Undeniably, engineering solutions play an integral role in the field of biomedical sciences. In view of this,
1) IIT Kanpur established the Department of Biological Sciences and Bioengineering (BSBE) in the year 2001, which is dedicated for fundamental & translational research in biomedical sciences. The M. Tech program offered by BSBE is ranked highest amongst such programs offered in the country and it tops in the research and innovation impact in this area.
2) Additional centers were set up over the years to add to the ecosystem of IIT Kanpur in the area of healthcare and Medtech.
3) SIIC at IIT Kanpur is one of the world class incubation centers with multiple success stories, and has the highest patent to commercialization rate of 16 % (in comparison to Global average, which is only 1%).
4) Presently, in the Biotech and MedTech domains alone the incubator supports over 20 start-ups.
With all these centers working in confluence, IIT Kanpur has become the number one ecosystem for innovation and incubation in the area of biomedical research and healthcare in the country. Biomedical research and MedTech innovations thrive in the transdisciplinary ecosystem. This is highlighted by the fact that, in the wake of Covid-19 pandemic, it became clearer that India lacks a required healthcare system and emergency care. During these unpredictable situations, IIT Kanpur faculty and researchers rose to the difficult situation, and multiple innovative ideas to fight against Covid-19 were conceived. Product prototypes were developed and 2 of the major products have been even tested for clinical feasibility and are being used today.
1) Development of high end indigenized invasive ventilator, and
2) Development of scalable and reusable N95 and N99 masks with enhanced antiviral/antibacterial property.
However, presently, in IIT Kanpur, even with thriving biomedical research activities, there is a major missing link which is absence of clinical set up on campus (Image). Although, there are existing collaborations with Medical colleges and Hospitals, distant clinical collaborations pose several challenges that compromise the overall outcome. The MedTech ecosystem at IIT Kanpur will be complete when there is a medical program on campus bringing in the clinical set up.
With this, we at IIT Kanpur started to work on the concept of establishing a full-fledged Medical School comprising of Centres of Excellence (CoE) and a super speciality hospital on campus. This proposed School of Medical Research and Technology (SMRT) would combine medicine with engineering and develop technology-based interventions for,
Besides its academic programs, the R&D focus of the school would be on developing need‐driven medical devices and technologies.
The institute envisages to establish one-of-its-kind medical school that would offer EnMed (Engineering in Medicine) programs wherein medical graduates will also be trained in engineering disciplines and vice versa to successfully bridge the technology gap and offer solutions to medical needs that are unique to India.
Recently, Board of Governors IIT Kanpur have approved the proposal to establish ‘Centers of Excellence (CoE)’ on different thematic areas on futuristic medicine as part of SMRT and a super specialty hospital as an extension of CoE on campus.
IIT Kanpur is a Government of India Funded Technical Institute. It is dependent on Central Government funding to the extent of over 75% of its needs. As the Institute grows, the gap between Central Government funds and the Institute needs is widening. It is estimated that to meets its aspirational needs, the Institute needs to generate an additional Rs 100 to 125 crore every year. As part of the Golden Jubilee initiatives IIT Kanpur had engaged McKinsey to create a long term strategic vision for the Institute. One of the key recommendations of McKinsey was to create a professional fund raising organization for IIT Kanpur.
IIT Kanpur Development Foundation (IITKDF) was approved as a separate section 8 company of IIT Kanpur by the Board of Governors in June 2020. Since then, the company has been formed and its board of directors constituted. IITK Development Foundation will be the fundraising arm of IIT Kanpur and will work in tandem with IITK Foundation USA. The company expects to start its operations in January 2021.
IITK Students’ Gymkhana started a campaign to provide financial help to the workers of the Institute. Campus workers working in shops, eateries, canteens, and as vendors, rickshaw pullers etc. suffered heavy financial losses due the Covid-19 pandemic repeated lock downs. Through the generous donations of our alumni and well-wishers, IIT Kanpur along with Students’ Gymkhana raised INR 75,90,909. Our esteemed alumnus, Dr. Dev Joneja generously contributed USD 55000 for this cause. Such huge support from the Institute, helped ease out the financial problems for our campus workers as the donations received were used to pay back loans, buy rations and other everyday essentials. Our campus workers are grateful for this generosity and some have expressed their gratitude.
I thank IIT Kanpur and those who helped me in these difficult times. I used the money to pay off by debts.
I can’t thank enough the donors of this campaign. I pray for their happiness and success.
I used the money to pay school feel of my children.I used money to pay off my debts
I used the money to buy food ration. I thank IITK and donors for all the help.
One of the most successful campaigns of IIT Kanpur, One Alumnus One Student, was launched to raise funds for 600 undergraduate students, who come from economically weaker sections of the society, to help provide them with IT hardware. Since the Institute had decided to go completely online for at least semester-1 of the Academic Year 2020-2021 due to the Coronavirus pandemic, there were 600 such students who needed IT help in order to continue their studies online. The campaign was launched on July 22 2020, and funds had to be collected by the end of August, as the semester was to begin on September 01 2020. Donations poured in under CSR initiative and from our alumni to this cause amounting to Rs. 223.10 lakhs. The amount was used to reimburse IT hardware (laptop/broadband) cost purchased by students. IITK students have expressed their heartfelt gratitude.
Thank you so much, Sir, for your help. I was really in need of this crucial support. I was unsure about my taking online classes, as the internet connectivity in my hometown is very erratic, and mobile data is not convenient. I am grateful to the Institute for this timely support. I am glad that I was selected for this support. Thank you once again.
I am thankful to IIT Kanpur as well as to my donor. I was planning to buy a new laptop and my dream came true through this campaign. It is indeed a great initiative to help students. Your support has inspired me to work harder, and I will definitely help IIT Kanpur as an alumna in future.
This is indeed a great support offered by my institute in times of such uncertainty. The generosity shown by IITK alumni is praiseworthy. This valuable donation will ensure that I would be able to continue my studies online. My heartfelt thanks to everyone.
This priceless donation has arrived at the most crucial time. Without this, I wouldn’t have been able to continue my studies online. I have no words to express my gratitude to my donor and my institute. I hope I would be able to repay this debt one day by giving back to IITK.
As scientists and engineers, we will appreciate that most of the problems we were given during our tenure at IIT Kanpur began with an ‘Initial Condition’. For 14 Trees Foundation that challenge looks like this:
This land, adjacent to a village just outside Pune was lush green forest when India gained Independence. Since then, human depredation has reduced it to a harsh and arid landscape. Timber logging and clear-cutting without any planned replenishment of the trees followed by top-soil erosion in the rains further perpetuated by indiscriminate and uncontrolled annual burning to facilitate cattle-grazing has left this area devoid of trees, water, life and hope.
In this challenging environment, the idea of 14 Trees Foundation has taken root. Dr. Pravin Bhagwat’s vision is not simply to plant a sapling on fertile land and walk away but rather to re-engineer an entire eco-system in inhospitable territory. He has a blueprint to achieve this in balance and harmony with humans and nature while addressing the pre-eminent crises of our times – deforestation and habitat loss, species extinction and climate change.
It starts with a massive nursery of 80,000 saplings of flora native to the Sahyadri range, prepared with help from the local villagers. These are planted in land owned by the Foundation, by the roadsides leading up to the village and increasingly on land that belongs to the locals who have seen the transformative power of the idea. The commitment is to maintain the saplings for three years till they are self-sustaining.
To have a chance, these seedlings need air, soil, water, protection and time. 14 Trees works to maintain these sites with a labor force from the villages (currently 110 strong) who manually ferry water from the many ponds which were dug. This creates a perennial water source with the added benefit of raising groundwater aquifer levels for the villagers, for their cattle, crops and the local wildlife. A leopard has begun to visit one of the ponds!
The trees are protected with locally constructed bamboo cages and labelled with a distinctive sign that indicates the variety of the sapling and the sponsoring individual or organization. 14 Trees is seeing an over 95% survival rate in its reforestation efforts. The name itself comes from the calculation that 14 trees will offset the carbon dioxide load on nature by the normal activity of an individual human being in their lifetime.
This is what the solution to the defined problem looks like today with over 21,000 trees planted. There is a grove for the IITK Faculty, the Dr. P.K. Kelkar grove for the Directors and plans for each graduating batch of the institute to commemorate its Diamond Jubilee and 40,000 alumni. Find out more on how to be involved at 14Trees.org.
