Intellectual Ventures seeks the disclosure of inventions related to Brain-Computer interfaces for Augmented Reality (AR). An immersive and fluid user experience in augmented reality (AR) applications will require new human-computer interaction mechanisms and frameworks that are faster and less obtrusive than those requiring physical data entry (such as text entry). The final frontier in such an immersive interaction is a brain-computer interface that allows users to control computers and applications with their thoughts.

Intellectual Ventures seeks the disclosure of inventions related to material and texture identification from images and video for Augmented Reality (AR). Augmented Reality seeks to overlay images of real objects with virtual information. In many cases, it is important to identify the material and texture of real objects from images or video, in order to better track them and realistically overlay augmented information on these objects. Therefore, object and texture recognition under varying “real world†physical environments and lighting conditions is needed.

Intellectual Ventures seeks the disclosure of inventions related to audio for Augmented Reality (AR). The goal of Augmented Reality is to provide users with an extended, fluid interaction with their environment. Audio is an important feature in a fully immersive AR experience and may, in some cases, form the basis for that experience. The audio for AR must seamlessly mix the augmented audio with the real audio to provide an engaging AR soundscape.

Intellectual Ventures seeks the disclosure of inventions related to user interface for Augmented Reality (AR). The goal of Augmented Reality is to provide users with an extended, fluid interaction with their environment. The user interface is the most critical component of providing users a natural interaction with AR systems. The AR user interface must provide users with a sense of immersion, be intuitive to work with, and support multimodal (e.g., touch, motion, gesture, and speech) interaction.

Intellectual Ventures (IV) seeks the disclosure of inventions related to privacy and safety of data for Augmented Reality and related applications. Privacy and safety of data are concerns for users of Augmented Reality (AR) systems. These concerns are also important to people who provide information that helps AR systems be more valuable, such as location-specific information. Without solutions to address these concerns, the AR market will not grow to its full potential. Many aspects of AR, such as the real-time nature of AR, its highly personal nature, and the broad range of potential applications, present significant unique challenges – and opportunities—for innovative solutions. It is anticipated that a range of technologies could be generated in response to this Request For Invention. IV wants to encourage its network of Inventors to think broadly and creatively about the challenges and potential novel solutions.

"Most discrete devices for monitoring body health and function incorporate specific single-purpose sensors, which are bulky and often only capture piecemeal data without providing a comprehensive snapshot of an individual’s health. Such sensors are often cumbersome and heavy, require frequent battery replacement, restrict natural movement, and interfere with daily activities and sleep patterns. While many of the products currently on the market increase health awareness to some degree, owning several of these discrete devices can be cost prohibitive; such combinations also offer a false sense of security with regard to health. Medical monitoring devices that are small, low-cost, lightweight, multi-functional, wireless, simple, low-power, and minimally obtrusive are very desirable. Of particular interest are inventions that enable a single physician to remotely monitor multiple patients undergoing similar procedures or with similar conditions."

Intellectual Ventures (IV) seeks the disclosure of inventions related to repurposing of existing models for use in Augmented Reality and related applications. Models of environments and objects are used extensively in Augmented Reality (AR) systems. In many cases, the quality and “information resolution†of models defines the fundamental capabilities of an AR system. Unfortunately, creation of models is often an expensive and laborious process. Re-purposing of existing models is one approach to reducing this cost. New approaches, potentially in the form of middleware, are needed to discover, translate, use, manage, and supplement existing models. We anticipate that a wide range of technologies could be generated in response to this Request For Invention. IV wants to encourage its network of Inventors to think broadly and creatively about the challenges and potential novel solutions.

Intellectual Ventures seeks the disclosure of inventions that further enable object recognition for use in Augmented Reality and other environments. Object recognition is an important component for Augmented Reality (AR) systems. The more an AR system understands what an end-user is looking at (person, specific person, mood of the person), the deeper and more valuable an experience it can offer. While the field has been the subject of research for many years, several areas for potential innovation exist. This innovation can be applied to a range of markets -- from industrial to consumer. It is anticipated that a wide range of technologies could be generated in response to this Request For Invention. IV wants to encourage its network of Inventors to think broadly and creatively about the challenges and potential novel solutions.

"The “big picture†vision for Augmented Reality (AR) is simple: the world as user interface – using real objects, places and people encountered in the world as reference points for additional computer-generated information. AR has traditionally focused on computer graphics objects being blended into real footage in real-time, but the field is expanding."

Intellectual Ventures seeks the disclosure of inventions in the broad area of information retrieval and search with specific emphasis on using GPU based systems as applicable to massively large databases. Information retrieval is a fundamental problem for organizations and consumers working with the large and rapidly increasing volume of digital data (both user generated and machine generated) and data types (text, pictures, music, and video, for instance). In this RFI, we address how the massive computation capabilities of commodity graphics processor (GPU) hardware might be applied to traditional and more large-scale information retrieval problems.39-55

Historically, computer secondary storage has been based on the rotating-platter magnetic disk drive. Future approaches to storage architectures (for example, flash based solid state drives) will have fundamentally different performance characteristics than traditional storage media, and thus invalidate many of the underlying implementation and semantic assumptions of the existing software stack. This RFI concerns itself with how these software components will change to accommodate new storage technologies, and what new software mechanisms will need to be invented to make efficient use of the new media.

Although some petabyte-scale data sources will be tolerant of occasional inaccuracy, unavailability, or outright failure, others will not. Additionally, some of the anticipated petabyte-scale data producers (for example, the scientific community) will have sustained data rates that will outstrip the capacity of many of the existing redundant storage techniques; worse, the data will be fundamentally irreproducible, thus making it imperative that it is preserved intact. This RFI concerns itself with what lies beyond our current approach to ensuring consistency and robustness of large, petabyte-scale data repositories.

Efficiently building ubicomp environments will require next-generation software development tools. Historically, approaches to software development have focused on predictable, single-threaded applications built upon well-defined, thoroughly tested APIs. However, ubicomp will present even greater demands for loosely-coupled, distributed, asynchronous, and dynamically-composable programming methodologies. Current approaches to development, modeling, testing, and debugging have not yet demonstrated that they can meet the requirements posed by ubicomp.
If you are intrested in this problem statement then mail to power@iitk.ac.in with subject as RFI id being displayed in your browser.
In a ubiquitous computing (“ubicomp”) environment, users will be immersed in a world of dynamically changing connectivity where remote resources are exploited for a wide variety of services. Current business models—in which users and devices are “bound” to a particular network—are ill-suited for allowing rapid, transparent, and promiscuous access to networks, devices, and services. Economic models that enable the ubicomp service provider to monetize subscribers/usage will drive investment and mass-adoption thereby helping realize the ubicomp vision. This RFI concerns itself with technologies that enable new or improved economic and business models for ubicomp.
If you are intrested in this problem statement then mail to power@iitk.ac.in with subject as RFI id being displayed in your browser.
Sensors, displays, processors, and other devices play a foundational role in ubiquitous computing (“ubicomp”). All of these will be omnipresent in the near future—with potentially thousands of ubicomp devices interacting with each other within the space of a few meters. With every ubicomp device clamoring for power, decreasing their energy requirements is essential to reducing their size, environmental impact, and operating costs. While significant work is underway in improving battery technologies (which is beyond the scope of this RFI), there is an equally important opportunity to improve the run-time efficiency of these devices through software power management.
