Introduction

The world population has reached 6 billion and is increasing at an alarming rate. More alarming is the rate at which the resources, mainly the ones that were abundant once, are being depleted. One of them is WATER. Today about half a billion people don't even have enough water to drink and this figure will rise to about 2.8 billion by 2025. So there is a grave need to take measures to conserve water.

The world today, is being subjected to sudden cutbacks in food production as water tables drop to greater and greater depths. A lot of aquatic species, dependent on water as per their definition, are becoming extinct due to shortage of water. If something is not done quickly, we may be next!

The :problem to be addressed is not that of scarcity of water. but of its wastage where it is available in surplus. Preventing wastage of water may lead to our successfully fighting with the scarcity of water.

This is exactly the problem we are trying to address in our project. There are numerous methods by which water is wasted in our daily life, but we identified a major source and tried to come up with a solution to prevent the wastage by that method.

NEED STATEMENT:

Contrary to the popular belief, a lot of water is wasted in our  household works. The wastage figure might be sky-high for industries and irrigation facilities, those for the household aren't too far behind. According to a WHO report - approximate Water wastage in an average household is about 110,000 gallons / year !

The figure above seems much larger than it actually is. . So what we need is a device (lets say mechanism, at this moment), which would enable the user to "open and forget". And since the major scarcity and erratic nature of water supply is faced by citizens mostly of middle and lower class, the project should be available at reasonable price. And again, when we consider the educational background and technical familiarity of these classes, we have to employ another constraint on the project - it has to be handy, easy to operate and safe.

All the above needs translated into the idea behind our Aquacon. A device that would enable the user to just open the tap and leave the prevention of water overflowing to the device.

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                              Conclusion:

The device made under this course is an effective mechanism in preventing unnecessary wastage of water in normal households. All the brainstorming and hard-work put into it for the last three months has finally translated into something that people should look forward to using in their houses. Being responsible citizens of the society, it is the duty of each and every individual to prevent wastage of water and this device helps in making the task simpler. Now people do not have to sacrifice their precious time and can afford to watch television, while the Aquacon ensures that no water overflows from

their buckets. In a final summary, the device should attract a lot ofpeople's attention for the following reasons: ~

The device is pretty cheap and easy to operate.

The portable device can be fixed to any bucket and any tap.

There is virtually no maintenance cost  associated with the device.

It provides the much-coveted freedom to open and forget.
