Introduction:
The large number of insects that are commonly found in the households (like spiders, flies, cockroaches, mosquitoes, bees etc) are really trouble creating. Any step towards eliminating these creatures would be appreciated as the present solution (i.e.. using insecticides) has many drawbacks - it is time consuming, has a high operating cost and provides a short-term relief. Therefore what is required is something which lasts long and does not require frequent attention.
The insect on which the project focuses is the cockroach. Cockroaches mostly breed in drains of kitchens and bathrooms. The design is a device that can be fixed on the mouth of drains, thereby not allowing cockroaches to enter the house. The design also prevents heavier waste particles from going into the drain - this reduces drain-blockages. In the long run, food is not available to the cockroaches and their growth is minimized - ultimately they are eliminated.
The design (when in use), always remains in contact with water, so it has been made in stainless steel which is a corrosion resistant material. Easiest ways of fabrication have been used to give the product a reasonable cost and make it suitable for mass production.
Conclusion:
The motivation behind this project has been to design a simple product that looks at the problem of cockroaches from a different view point. A solution was desired that involved low operating cost, was more effective, could be easily manufactured, was environment friendly and could be easily handled. In short, a product that scores over the existing methods in almost all aspects.
The design presented can be seen to have all the attributes that will go a long way in making it successful. Although all aspects have been looked into to make the design robust, economical and aesthetically pleasing, the product is still open to further developments and modifications.
