Introduction:
This project tries to look into the phenomenon of Depression/Mania among the student community living in the IIT Kanpur campus. We feel there are a number of reasons that could cause a student to go through psychological turmoil here. Hence we thought it would be interesting to see whether the number of students afflicted with such disorders is abnormally high or not.
We intend to measure the severity of manic symptoms and help the concerned person to decide whether or not to seek professional psychiatric evaluation. Further, we intend to submit this report to the concerned student authorities in case we think the matter needs further looking into.
The core symptoms of depression are:
lowered mood
loss of energy and interest
a feeling of physical illness or of being rundown .
poor concentration
altered appetite and sleep
slowing down of physical and mental functions
Conclusion:
Looking upon the information we have got from the two survey we
have done we can draw the following conclusions :-
A lot of students seem to be suffering from moderate to severe mania or depression. As we can see from pie charts drawn on the basis of results we have got from the surveys done using Dr. Nirmal's mania scale and Hamilton Depression scale.
