INTRODUCTION:
As our topic of the term paper Gasoline - Lead Alert suggests, we will be talking about Leaded/Unleaded petrol [ LP /ULP ] which are the two types of fuels generally used in our automobiles nowadays. ULP has very low Lead (Pb) contents in comparison to LP .According to a recent issue of the Landon weekly" NEW SCIENTIST "an article by Dr. Roger Masters says - A moving vehicle using leaded petrol leaves behind as its exhaust - heavy metals (mainly Pb and Mg ), these effects the brain and contribute to violent and antisocial behavior. Lead prevents the neurological cells from performing their job of ensuring a stable environment in the brain .In support of his thesis Dr. Roger Master has further cited statistics which shows that in regions where Pb pollution levels were highest in US ,the incidence of robbery, murder and sex crimes was three times the US average. This toxic metal apparently alters the brain chemistry paving the way to violent behavior.
FEATURES:
Safe lead levels in Blood: In October 1991 , the theoretically safe Pb level in the blood was announced to be 10 mg per decaleter in US . |
|
According to a survey in Sydney 25% decrease in Lp directly showed 75% de- crease of lead in air. This straightly corresponds to claiming that Lp is the real culprit for increased lead levels in air. |
|
Other sources of lead in environment are coal, burning wood ,spray paints and news prints. |
|
Harmful compounds which are released by Lp are: |
a) Brominated compounds: Responsible for Ozone layer depletion.
b) 1,3 Butadiene: Irritant to skin, eyes ,long term effects include tumours ,
liver enlargement.
