Craton area

The southern parts of the Gangetic plains, south of the axial Ganga river, are drained by the rivers originating in the peninsular hills (cratons). These rivers and the alluvial plains formed by them are significantly different from the Himalayan rivers in terms of channel morphology, floodplain topography, sediment composition and sedimentary architecture. Examples are Chambal, Betwa, and Son, all of which join the Yamuna river after draining a large tract of southern plains.
