High mountain rivers

In contrast to the extremely flat alluvial topography of the plains, the mountainous tract of the Himalaya is characterized by high erosional relief and tectonically controlled drainage. The Alaknanda river, which ultimately is called Ganga after its confluence with the Bhagirathi at Devprayag, is chosen as an illustration.
