ABSTRACTActive matter contains components which are capable of taking up energy from their surroundings and turning it into motion. Examples include molecular motors and pumps, which transport material in the living cell, self- propelled organisms and, surprisingly, vibrated monolayers of granular rods. I will summarise our recent and not-so-recent work on order, fluctuations and flow in collections of active particles, in a talk aimed primarily at students. |
