Geometry and Dynamics of Defects in Solids
Dr. Anurag Gupta, Department of Mechanical Engineering
My work attempts to gain a basic understanding of the geometry (or structure) and the (irreversible) thermodynamics of defects within solid continua. Currently I am involved with the following three problems: i) Material symmetry and the non-Euclidean geometry of defects in crystalline media, ii) Dynamics of incoherent interfaces, in particular the coupled grain boundary motion and the shock induced phase boundary, iii) Surface and interface growth in biology (for eg. tree trunk and bone cartilage). In addition, I am interested in the theoretical problems related to finite deformation plasticity.
