Course Objective

Course Objective: This is a Beginners course, where the first step towards learning German as a foreign language will be made. The basics of German language will be covered.

This level corresponds to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, Level A 1.1

At the end of this level-

One can ask or tell time, days of the week, months, colours, names of common fruits, vegetables and numbers in German.

One can understand and use familiar everyday expressions and make simple sentences.

One can introduce oneself and others both in a formal and informal setting

One can ask others about where they come from, where they currently reside, what they do professionally, what are their hobbies – and can respond to questions of similar nature. One can communicate in a simple manner if the person they are speaking to speaks slowly and clearly.

One can ask and answer questions related to directions to a place or a building.

One can go shopping in a Supermarket to buy everyday stuff or go to a restaurant and carry out the necessary conversation.

Course Content

Week 1

German alphabets, special German sounds, introduction to umlaut

How to greet people during different times of the day and how to say goodbye –both formally and informally.

How to introduce oneself and others in a formal and informal setting.

Numbers from 0-50

To be able to give ones telephone number and email address

Days of the week, months of the year, names of colours, fruits and vegetables.

To be able to spell simple words

To be able to speak about different countries and languages.

Geographical directions

German grammar: introduction to nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, basic sentence structure, types of sentences

Week 2-3

Numbers from 50 to 1000

To be able to write/speak about ones hobbies

To be able to describe ones work/profession, work timings

To be able to name the different seasons of the year and their characteristics.

To be able to set up a profile on the internet.

How to arrange an informal appointment/date with someone

German Grammar: articles, verb conjugation of haben, sein and other regular verbs, types of question sentences, different ways to make plural nouns, introduction to German cases-(nominative)

Week 3-4

Numbers more than 1000

To be able to recognize and name different places and buildings in a city (the town hall, railway/bus station, supermarket, bank, post-office, airport, sea-port, churches, schools etc)

To be able to enquire and/or answer questions related to finding ones way around the city-to be able to ask for directions and to be able to describe directions to a place, if asked.

Different modes of transport

Use of international words in German language

Grammar: definite, indefinite and negation articles, use of kein and nicht, formal imperative sentences

Week 4-5

To be able to speak about different meals of the day, names of different food items-

To plan and make a list for grocery shopping and how to converse in a supermarket when buying things.

How to converse during a meal-to express appreciation for something well-cooked or to say that one is full and cannot eat more.

Comprehension: To be able to understand simple text and answer questions based on the text ( text based on professions related to the field of cooking)

Grammar: introduction to accusative case, sentence structure, accusative verbs, W-word questions

Week 5-6

How to read and express time in German, to be able to make/express an appointment on a particular day and at a particular time

To be able to excuse oneself for being late or how to react when someone is asking to be excused.

To be able to name different members of the family and relatives and speak about them.

How to make an appointment by phone

Grammar: Adverbs of time, articles showing possession (mine, yours, his, her...) modal verbs: introduction, sentence structure and use of müssen, können, wollen in german sentences.

Week 7-8

How to read dates in German, to be able to tell ones birthday and those of family and friends, to be able to ask about another person's birthday.

To be able to plan things together with someone.

To be able to understand an invitation to an event or a gathering and to be able to write an invitation oneself.

To be able to write a mail/email to either accept or decline an invitation.

To be able to order a meal and pay in a restaurant.

Comprehension: to be able to understand texts and answer questions.

Grammar: Adverbs related to expressing date, separable verbs, personal pronouns in accusative case, past tense forms of haben and sein


Books to be used: Netzwerk, Tangram Aktuell, personal notes.


e-certificate will be issued to the candidates who will successfully complete the course.
