Course Summary

This introductory course covers key topics related to Aerodynamic analysis of Unmanned Air Vehicles, by numerical simulations. The goal is to enable participants to get an overview of the various aspects of Aerodynamic Modeling. Use of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) tools would be emphasized through lectures and hands-on training/demonstration sessions.

Course Content:

Total Duration: 40 hours (split between lectures, tutorials and self-assignments)
  • Governing equations: compressible flow, incompressible flow, potential flow, boundary layer flow. Equations in rotating frame of reference.
  • Laminar v/s. Turbulent flows. Energy cascade and energy spectrum in turbulent flows.
  • Introduction to Direct Numerical Simulation, (U-) RANS simulation.
  • Philosophy of turbulence modeling, popular turbulence models used in computational aerodynamics.
  • Expose on Large Eddy Simulation.
  • Problem set-up, computational domain, boundary conditions in CFD.
  • Meshing: structured v/s. unstructured. Overset meshes.
  • Introduction to Finite Difference Method, Finite Element Method, Finite Volume Method, Immersed Boundary Method.
  • Time integration schemes.
  • Actuator Disk Model – momentum theory, blade element.
  • Grid Convergence.
  • Post-processing of data.
  • Tutorial sessions.

To maximize the learning from the course it is advised that the participant actively engages in the tutorial sessions. The sessions would demonstrate different steps in CFD analysis of UAV, videlicet, defining computational domain, prescribing boundary conditions, setting up turbulence model, running simulations and monitoring them, and post-processing of data. It will be assumed that the participant has a laptop/mobile-workstation that s/he will use for participating in the tutorial sessions.
