As government of India is focusing on Assemble in India for the World
to promote the manufacturing industries, imparting basic knowledge to the young generation played a key role to fulfill the government initiative.
Materials form the backbone of the manufacturing industries. The development of new materials and/or refinement of the exiting material composition /processing techniques are expected to broaden the diversity of the application of materials in the coming year. Development of new and advanced materials demand innovation in existing manufacturing processes to obtain the desired properties in the materials without compromising on the production front. In the above context, this QIP one week lab based short term course has been planned to provide an understanding of the fundamentals of materials processing techniques and their use in a range of sectors like automotive, defense and aerospace. The course will introduce important aspects of casting/ solidification, different joining processes, powder metallurgy, micro fabrication processes and various deformation techniques like forging, rolling, swaging etc. In the above broad prospective, the course will have three major objectives to serve:
The fundamental concept of material manufacturing processes
To provide the fundamental as well as the application oriented knowledge for understanding important concepts in materials engineering related to the manufacturing of materials
Exposure of the laboratory experiments on manufacturing and materials property evaluation
A series of lectures will be delivered by the specialist including our faculty colleagues from IIT Kanpur, on the fundamentals and manufacturing technology. The purpose of this course is to gets experience of the participants in different manufacturing equipment’s housed in various labs of our department as well as to expose them the pedagogy of IIT Kanpur. At the end of the course, the participants will be expected to have the basic idea on how to tailor the manufacturing process for a given materials to improve their desired properties.
To provide a pedagogical underpinning of material processing and manufacturing approach both from fundamental as well as applied aspects.
Introduction to basic concepts utilized in materials selection and their properties that influence subsequent manufacturing processes
Basic elements of the solidification processing, joining particulate material processing and deformation processing.
Advanced manufacturing concepts (micro fabrication , additive manufacturing , rapid prototype, semi-solid processing)
Virtual demonstration on various manufacturing process from a metallurgical context
Extensive Q&A session and discussion of various Case Studies at end of each virtual lab session.
