Objectives of the Course

The objective of this course is to provide an advanced understanding of ceramics and composites for various functional applications in the field of electronics, space, defense, energy and biology. The course intends to render a detailed understanding of physics and chemistry behind the designing of novel functional ceramic materials and their composites with metals or polymers. The emphasis will be given on the importance of ceramic processing with respect to defect chemistry in order to improve functional properties of ceramics. The advanced ceramic processing such as Flash Sintering, Spark-plasma sintering, additive manufacturing and ceramic coating will be discussed. Furthermore, non-linear properties of ceramic materials will be discussed using matrix and Tensor method in correlation with crystal symmetry. State-of-the-art problems and challenges will be explained to provide a better appreciation of ceramic materials and devices.
