Dr. Bijaya Bikram Samal is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at IIT Kanpur. He earned his Ph.D. in Four-Dimensional (4D) Printing from IIT Kharagpur. He was the first person in India to begin research in 4D printing in 2016, and he has been advancing the field for the past nine years. In 2018, he created the world’s strongest 4D-printed part, becoming the first person globally to achieve this feat. His research on 4D printing and related topics has been published in numerous prestigious journals, books, and conference proceedings. He has also edited a book “4D Printing Technology: Principles, Materials, and Applications” (WILEY-Scrivener) He has delivered invited lectures, including as Chief Guest at NIT Tiruchirappalli and keynote addresses at international conferences such as ATRIUM, Sastra University and the 4D Printing & Meta Materials Conference in the Netherlands. He serves as Series Editor for Advances in Additive Manufacturing Technologies (WILEY-Scrivener) and has reviewed over 20 articles for several SCI/Scopus-indexed journals. He holds the title of Fellow with the Bose Science Society. He is a Chartered Engineer and Associate Member of Institute of Engineers, India. He is a Life Member of Indian Society for Technical Education. He has received several awards, including the Best Research Paper Award, IOP Trusted Reviewer Award, and an International Travel Grant from IIT Kharagpur. In 2018, he was awarded by the Chief Minister of Odisha for his innovation, receiving start-up incubation and a Nidhi-Prayas grant from IIT Bhubaneswar.
