In the talk titled, ‘Wave propagation characterization and vibration control in composite and periodic structures with application to non-destructive inspection’, Dr. Rajendra Kumar Munian will speak about his research in the following areas:
Wave propagation characterization is an important aspect for various applications ranging from vibration control to non-destructive inspection (NDI). In last few decades, potential of ultrasonic wave propagation-based inspection of structural components has been explored.
Numerical simulation has major role here which is to obtain a detailed insight regarding the nature of wave scattering and establish a suitable quantitative method of inspection using remotely located piezoelectric transducers on composite structures. Various numerical methods evolved in the last few decades to deal with elastic wave propagation problems, among them time domain spectral finite element (TSFE) method is proved to be an accurate and computationally efficient method due to its spectral convergence properties. In this talk, I will discuss some of the important insights developed from simulation-based understanding which can be a support to the development of new detection techniques.
The research findings augment potential of modelling and simulation for the inspection methodologies. Another important application of characterization of wave propagation in periodic structure is vibration control. Specially designed periodic structure exhibit stop-band and pass bands having application in vibration isolation and control. I will discuss some the aspects of designing mechanical metamaterial for enhanced bandgap and exploring the possible scope of energy harvesting from mechanical vibration. Idea of dynamic analysis is extended to study the material failure behavior numerically and I will talk about the possible research scope for design and development of various structures including aerospace structures, automobile safety system, ballistic and blast resistance systems.
Dr. Munian has done his B.Tech and M.Tech (Dual degree) from IIT Kharagpur. Also he did his Ph.D from the Department of Aerospace Engineering at Indian Institute of Science Bangalore and worked as a post doctoral fellow at IISc. Currently, he is working as a Post-doctoral Fellow at Department of Mechanical Engineering at IIT Kanpur and have an extensive research experience in developing simulations schemes under finite element framework for modeling elasto-dynamic problems. While doing his research he developed his expertise in modeling and simulation of material behavior under impact load and subsequent material failure and also worked on contact dynamic induced non-linerity and application in vibro-thermography. His current area of research is on bubble coalescence, shape memory alloy and meta-materials.
