Convocation Medals/Awards/Prizes

The Institute recognizes the academic achievements of its students in the form of several convocation awards, medals, and prizes that are given to the students at the time of graduation during the convocation ceremony. The various convocation awards, medals, and prizes available for students are listed in the following table along with their criteria. In addition to the criteria mentioned in the table below, the following conditions are applied while deciding the various convocation awards, medals, and prizes. These criteria and conditions were approved in various meetings of the Academic Senate (see the list at the end).

  1. All convocation awards shall be given in the convocation at the end of an academic year i.e. single convocation around June. A student is eligible for award(s) only if s/he is graduating with his/her batch on the convocation day.
  2. The Post Graduate (PG) students admitted in December shall be considered along with students graduating at the end of succeeding semester (May).
  3. For all CPI based awards/medals/prizes, the CPI up to only one digit after decimal shall be considered, which will also be consistent with the format of the transcripts issued by the DOAA office. For breaking the ties, the following may be considered in that order: (a) number of A*'s, (b) number of A's, and (c) credits earned. If still tied, no other/additional effort shall be made to break the tie and the award shall be given to all students having the same CPI or amount split as the case may be.
  4. All convocation awards/medals/prizes based purely on CPI shall be decided by the SSPC using the latest CPI data obtained from the DOAA office rather than seeking nominations from individual departments. For example, President's Gold Medal (PGM), all General Proficiency Medals (GPMs), Dr. Prateek Mishra Memorial Gold Medal, Banco Foundation Prize, Batra Gold Medal, Prof. Vijay Mahajan Award, and Suman Gupta Gold Medal, etc.
  5. The GPM shall be given to the graduating student with the best academic performance (based on CPI) of each program of each department. For example, the department of mathematics and statistics has two 2-year M.Sc. programs: M.Sc.-Mathematics and M.Sc.-Statistics. As such, there shall be two GPMs: one for 2-year M.Sc. program in mathematics and another for 2-year M.Sc. program in statistics.
  6. One student can receive only one scholarship at a time but may receive any number of convocation awards/medals/prizes as s/he deserves. However, in order to encourage more students getting convocation awards/medals/prizes, the following combination of awards shall be avoided to be given to a single student as they have similar criteria:

a. Director's Gold Medal and Ratan Swarup Memorial Prize

b. Dr. Prateek Mishra Memorial Gold Medal and GPM (both EE, CPI based)

c. Banco Foundation Prize and GPM (both ME, CPI based)

d. Batra Gold Medal and GPM (both MSE, CPI based)

e. Suman Gupta Gold Medal and GPM (both Math & Stat, CPI based)

Since the GPM is an Institute award, it shall have higher priority; therefore, the other award may be given to a student with the next highest CPI.

  1. Any student who has received any punishment or disciplinary action by Senate/SSAC of any level including level zero will not be eligible to receive any award/scholarship. Such students should be screened out beforehand and must not be presented to the committee for any consideration.
  2. Any student who has secured an 'F' grade will not be eligible to receive any award other than those based on involvement in community services, art, and cultural activities, etc.
  3. For deciding any award involving UG project work, the project must have been carried out over at-least two regular semesters and duly approved/forwarded by the department. The UGPs for project-based awards should be UGP-2 and UGP-3 and not the extra credit courses (UGP-1 and UGP-4).
  4. A student can receive only one Institute-level convocation award based on project work.
