IIT Kanpur 's SURGE Program
Under the new Summer Undergraduate
Research Grant for Excellence (SURGE) program, second
and third year undergraduate students from NIT and IITK
(including those in the Dual Degree programs) undertake
short duration, but focused research projects and push
their intellectual abilities beyond those driven by
the classroom. The duration is 10 weeks from early-May
to end-July of each year. Selected students will receive
a stipend of Rs.10,000 for the entire 10-week duration;
an additional Rs.10,000 Award plus a commendation certificate
will be given to those SURGE students who produce exceptional
quality research during the 10 weeks.
In 2006, 10 Grants were offered to
exceptional applicants from IIT Kanpur; also, 11 students
from the National Institutes of Technology across the
country and 3 students from California Institute of
Technology (USA) also participated in the SURGE program.
All students who produce exceptional research will be
recognised.
IIT Kanpur student wishing to be accepted
for the SURGE program is required to identify a faculty
member on the campus who may be her/his potential research
mentor, discuss with her/him the research work to be
undertaken (clearly outlining the scope), and submit
an application along with the research proposal prepared.
Selected candidates require submitting a mid term report
after four weeks, and a final technical report and a
technical paper at the end of 10 weeks. The culmination
of the summer research is the Oral Presentation
and feedback of student experiences in SURGE.
NIT students aspiring for the 2009
SURGE Program must submit a research proposal, clearly
stating the research problem which she/he wishes to
undertake. Also, they must list names of three faculty
members of IIT Kanpur who could be likely Research Mentors
for supervising their proposed research. Please visit
the website of the institute (www.iitk.ac.in)
to know more about research interests or faculty members
of IIT Kanpur. Aspirants may note and appreciate that
this is a very special offer by the faculty members
of IIT Kanpur. To respect their privacy, applicants
are prohibited from contacting any
faculty member in IIT Kanpur (by letters, via
emails or in person) in support of their desire
to participate in 2009 SURGE Program. Any applicant
violating this will be automatically ineligible for
the 2006 SURGE Program. In addition, IIT Kanpur will
take a serious view of any such violation.
