The M.Tech programme runs for 4 semesters and includes both course work and a thesis component. Course work includes mandatory courses and electives that students can opt for in consultation with convener of the PSEP. Students also complete a 2 semester thesis with one of the CELP faculty as part of their M.Tech degree in cutting edge areas such as nanobiophotonics ultrafast optics and quantum optics and quantum computation to name a few
A unique part of M.Tech experience at CELP is a course on laboratory techniques that provides students with an opportunity to learn hands-on experimental skills in photonics.
PhD candidates admitted after a Masters degree in Engineering have to complete a minimum of four courses. The most important part of the PhD program is
the research work leading to a thesis. The research should represent an original investigation and is expected to make a significant contribution to the
knowledge in the subject. The thesis is examined by a board of examiners appointed by the institute and is also defended by the candidate in an oral
examination before a thesis board.
The MS program is a research predominant masters that has been recently
introduced at the IIT-K and students enrolling are expected to take up
challenging research projects as their thesis. The entry is either in
project mode wherein the students join on a designated sponsored research
project ongoing in the department (based upon their compatibilty with the
project requirements and preferably a valid GATE score) or in the
institute mode wherein they join on an institute scholarship (based on
GATE score and interview).
MSc: Physics Chemistry
MScin Physics/ MSc in Photonics related areas with GATE/CSIR/UGC-NET
Exceptional candidates with Bachelors degree may also be considered
Typically top hundred candidates among the received applicants are called for the interview.
Please note that interview date cannot be changed to accommodate candidates requests. However candidates can attend interviews in
other departments at IITK (if they are scheduled on the same day as PSEP interviews) by notifying us in advance.
The list of candidates called for interview is based on GATE score. Candidates are offered admission based on their performance in interview.
