CERTIFICATION OF VIBRATION DIAGNOSIS / CONDITION MONITORING PERSONNEL

Vibration analysis using measurements to monitor condition and diagnose faults in machinery has become a key activity in predictive maintenance programs for most industries. The effectiveness of these programs depends on the capabilities of individuals who perform the measurements and analyse the data.

The Vibration Institute of India has offered workshops similar to the one described above in different locations since 1999, Hawaii, Bangalore, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Cairns, Sydney and Mumbai. One such course is scheduled at the 5th Annual Australian Gas Turbines Conference 28-30 July, 2004 in Brisbane. The Institute also provides a certification program based on ISO/FDIS 18436-2. Certification programs have been conducted for Vibration Diagnosis Specialist Level - 1 in Kuala Lumpur, Singapore and Hong Kong; and Vibration Technologist in Singapore. One more certification program is planned to be given in Kuala Lumpur during summer 2004.

Vibration Diagnosis Specialist Level-I
Individuals certified as Vibration Diagnosis Specialist Level 1 are qualified personnel who are certified to perform industrial machinery vibration measurements and basic vibration analysis using single-channel measurements, with or without phase trigger signals, according to established and recognized procedures.

Personnel certified as Vibration Diagnosis Specialist Level 1 requires all the knowledge and skills expected of Vibration Trainees and shall also be qualified to
a) select the appropriate machinery vibration measurement technique;
b) set up instruments for basic resolution of amplitude, frequency and time;
c) perform basic vibration analysis of machinery and components such as shafts, bearings, gears, fans, pumps and motors using spectrum analysis; maintain a data base of results and trends;
d) perform basic (single channel) impact tests to determine natural frequencies;
e) classify, interpret and evaluate the test results (including acceptance tests) in accordance with applicable specifications, standards and recommend minor corrective actions.

Vibration Diagnosis Specialist Level-II
Individuals certified as Vibration Diagnosis Specialist Level 2 are qualified to perform and/or direct machinery, vibration measurements and vibration analysis according to established and recognized procedures. Personnel classified as Vibration Diagnosis Specialist Level 2 require all the knowledge and skills

a) expected of personnel classified as Vibration Diagnosis Specialist Level 1 and shall also be qualified to
b) select the appropriate machinery vibration analysis technique;
c) specify the appropriate vibration instrumentation hardware and software for both portable and permanently install systems;
d) measure and perform diagnosis of single-channel frequency spectra, as well as time-domain plots such as waveforms and orbits, under both steady-state and unsteady operating conditions, with or without a phase trigger,
e) establish vibration monitoring programs including determination of machines for periodic /continuous monitoring, frequency of testing, route plans, etc.; establish programs for the specification of vibration levels and acceptance criteria for new machinery;
f) recommend and perform field corrective actions, such as balancing, alignment, and replacement of machine parts;
g) be able to use acceleration enveloping (demodulation);
h) perform basic two-plane balancing; verify the calibration of vibration instrumentation;
i) report to management regarding program objectives, budgets, cost justification, and personnel development;
j) prepare reports for appropriate personal on machine condition, recommend corrective action and report on effectiveness of repairs; and also provide instructions and technical direction to vibration trainees.

Examination & Certification:

Our Certificate program focus on practicing reliability / vibration analysis engineers who shall have a combination of academic education, industrial training and practical experience to ensure that they understand the principles and procedures applicable to machinery vibration measurement and analysis.

The Vibration Institute of India (TVII) will conduct test and certificate. The examination will consist practical questions (random selection from a question bank to be supplied to those who opt for certification). The questions involve simple mathematical calculations (using a basic scientific calculator), the interpretation of charts and plots. The successful candidate with 80% of correct answers will qualify for relevant certification program

Specialist II requires the knowledge & practical skills of Specialist 1
