Dear Readers,

While the month of September winds up with bitter tragedies of deadly earthquakes and sad demise of Pataudi Jr, October has started with a sense of fear of markets plunging down and  recession hitting the corner of our minds.

To relax our nerves, We, at IIT Kanpur have ended the month of September with IME party organized by enthusiastic Junior batch where both faculty and students put their best foot forward on the dance floor.  Also,Impressions, the cultural fest for PG students saw a great deal of talent on stage buzzing with sprawling music and some rocking dance performances.

The current issue of Avant Garde attempts to take a look at Apple ’s future without Steve Jobs ,the path and the legacy which he has left behind for others to walk through. Monika and Nitin have deeply contemplated the road of Apple at the time of cut throat competition, challenges that lie ahead and Apple’s strategy to live upto the image people associate it with.

Taruna has tried to analyse the impact of recent RBI’s guidelines for licensing of new banks which was being eyed by powerful corporate sector for long. Cleverly, RBI has its own terms and conditions to protect its junta from falling  prey to private sector’s interests.

Flooded as the newspapers are with the  proceedings of various scams, Sandeep has analysed the role of Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India in showing the real face behind all mishappenings surrounding the nation.He discusses the structure and functionality of CAG besides measuring its effectiveness and overall competency.

As the world goes mobile and virtual money  increasingly becomes the norm, Bappaditya Roy of 2010 batch and now with Infosys tries to analyze the prospects of mobile transactions in a devrloping country like ours.

Alumni Speak section once again gives us a feel of real world. Vipul Mathurof 2007 batch and currently with Tata Consultancy Services, provides insights that might help the current batches in coming out of dilemma of choosing consulting or domain specialization early in their career.

We also have Summer Internship reports of Rubal Mehta on ‘Online Term Insurance: Premium and Analysis‘ and of Vishal Vivek Jacob on ‘Microfinance- Current Status and growing concerns in India’.
