Backing Intelligence Built for the Real World

Wadhwani School

The Wadhwani School of AI & Intelligent Systems integrates AI, robotics, cybersecurity, cyber-physical systems, policy and technology translation.

The Wadhwani School of AI & Intelligent Systems represents IIT Kanpur’s effort to move artificial intelligence beyond algorithms and isolated applications. Established with the support of the Wadhwani Foundation, the School brings together AI, robotics, cybersecurity, cyber-physical systems, policy and technology translation to create intelligent systems that can operate securely, responsibly and at scale.

Intelligence Must Engage With the Real World

Artificial intelligence is often understood through software. Its larger impact will emerge when intelligence becomes part of the physical and institutional systems on which society depends.

An autonomous machine must respond safely to changing environments. A digital system managing critical infrastructure must remain secure under attack. An AI tool used in healthcare, finance or governance must be accurate, explainable and aligned with the people affected by its decisions.

These challenges require computing, engineering, hardware, control systems, cybersecurity and policy to work together.

WSAIS was created around this wider understanding—not simply as an expansion of computer-science education, but as a multidisciplinary institution connecting foundational research with responsible real-world deployment.

A Partnership Designed for Long-Term Capability

The School was established through a partnership between IIT Kanpur and the Wadhwani Foundation, formalised in April 2025.

The Foundation’s support extends beyond physical infrastructure to academic programmes, scholarships, research, translation and entrepreneurial pathways.

WSAIS will also serve as a national SuperHub within the Wadhwani Innovation Network, supporting a wider ecosystem of partner institutions and helping strengthen research and innovation capacity beyond IIT Kanpur.

From AI Models to Intelligent Systems

An AI model may perform well in controlled conditions and still fail during deployment. Data changes, sensors produce incomplete information, machines encounter unexpected situations and systems face cyber threats.

An intelligent system must therefore combine learning and reasoning with hardware, security, control and human oversight.

The School brings together advanced AI, robotics, cybersecurity, cyber-physical systems, policy, outreach and technology translation. This allows discoveries to move from theory to prototype, from prototype to secure system and eventually towards responsible application.

Building for India’s Priorities

India’s intelligent systems must work across diverse languages, geographies, infrastructure and levels of digital access.

WSAIS can direct IIT Kanpur’s engineering depth towards areas including manufacturing, healthcare, agriculture, mobility, governance and critical infrastructure—developing solutions shaped by Indian operating conditions while meeting global standards.

Cybersecurity is central to this mission. As intelligence becomes embedded in factories, power systems, transport and public services, trust and resilience must be designed into systems from the beginning.

Creating Intelligence With Purpose

The School is also building pathways from research to products and enterprises through its translation centre and wider innovation network.

Its academic programmes will prepare students not only to train AI models, but also to understand systems, security, human interaction and the consequences of deployment.

The Wadhwani Foundation’s support has enabled IIT Kanpur to build an institution connecting machine intelligence with engineering reality, national priorities and societal responsibility.

Its impact will be measured not only by how intelligent its systems become, but by how meaningfully and responsibly that intelligence is put to work.
