Infosys Prize 2010 to Prof. Ashutosh Sharma

Prof. Ashutosh Sharma, Department of Chemical Engineering, has won the Infosys Prize 2010 in the category of Engineering and Computer Science. The Infosys Prize was awarded to Prof. Sharma in recognition of his fundamental contributions to the fields of surfaces and interfaces, adhesion, pattern formation, nanocomposites, materials science, and hydrodynamics, which have practical applications in such areas as energy storage, filtration, micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) and optoelectronics. The Infosys Science Foundation, a not-for-profit trust, was set up in February 2009 by the management of Infosys. The Foundation instituted the Infosys Prize, an annual award, to honor outstanding achievements of researchers and scientists across five categories : Social Sciences, Physical Sciences, Engineering and Computer Sciences, Mathematical Sciences and Life Sciences, each carrying a prize of rupees 50 Lakh. Research Challenges (REACH 2010)


Research Challenges (REACH) 2010: Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur has been organizing Research Challenges (REACH) symposia with an idea to develop interdisciplinary research and provide impetus to research activity being carried out in frontier areas of this Institute. REACH 2010 was organized from 10th to 12th October 2010. The themes identified for this symposium were:

  • High Performance Computing: Applications in Science and Engineering
  • Innovation and Design
  • Health, Environment and Life
  • Creating a Research Vision for IIT Kanpur

Under each of these themes there were 6 - 7 lectures by eminent invited speakers from within as well as outside the Institute. In addition there were poster sessions on October 10th and 11th. The aim of the poster session was to give an opportunity to young researchers to present their work and interact with experts in their respective areas of research.

PanIIT

PANIIT 2010: Alumni from all the IIT's converged at India Expo Center, Greater Noida, NCR Delhi, for a three-day (29th to 31st October 2010) networking and brainstorming session. President Pratibha Devisingh Patil inaugurated the PanIIT 2010 conclave through a video speech on 29th October, 2010. This year the PanIIT 2010 Global Conference focused on good governance, knowledge based economy, an entrepreneurial, innovative, equivalent and happy society. Speaking to delegates through a video message, President Patil appreciated the theme of the conclave - Sustainable Transformation - Our New India - and said that it was very relevant to the changes taking place around us. She also called for the development of technology with low carbon footprint. The President appreciated efforts taken by the organisers to hold this conclave which she regarded as highly important for building public, private and civil society partnership in the country. The other dignitaries who participated in the conference were Dr. Farooq Abdullah, Dr. Sam Pitroda, Mr. Arun Seth, Mr. Vijay Thadani, Mr. Hari Padmanabhan, Mr. R. S. Pawar, Dr. Montek Singh Ahluwallia, Mr. H E Lyonchhoen Jigme Y Thinley, Sri Sri Ravishankar and Mr. Kapil Sibal. The IIT Kanpur delegation consisting of Prof. Sanjay G. Dhande (Director), Prof. Sanjeev K. Aggarwal (Dean, Resource Planning and Generation), Prof. Manindra Agrawal (Chairman, Golden Jubilee Committee), Prof. Kripa Shankar (Secretary Alumni Association), Prof. N. Vyas (Department of Mechanical Engineering), Dr. Sameer Khandekar (Department of Mechanical Engineering) and staff of Dean, Resource Planning and Generation participated in the Conference. About 550 IIT Kanpur alumni from across the world attended the meet.

Faculty Honours and Awards

Prof. Ashutosh Sharma, Department of Chemical Engineering, has been elected Fellow of the Third World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) in Chemical Engineering, for the year 2010.

Prof. Manindra Agrawal, Department of Computer Science and Engineering, has been awarded the Third World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) Prize in Mathematics, for the year 2010.

Prof. R. P. Chhabra, Department of Chemical Engineering, has been elected Fellow of the National Academy of Sciences.

Dr. Kantesh Balani, Department of Material Science and Engineering, has been awarded the '2010 Young Metallurgist of the Year’ by the Ministry of Steel, Government of India.

Prof. Bikramjit Basu, Department of Material Science and Engineering, has been selected for the "Best Metallurgist of the Year" Award, funded by the Ministry of Steel .

Dr. Krishanu Biswas, Department of Materials Science and Engineering, has been selected for the IEI (Institution of Engineer India) Young Engineers Award 2010 - 2011 in Materials Science and Engineering discipline.

Dr. Anindita Chakrabarti, Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, has been awarded the Dr. M. N. Srinivas Memorial Prize 2010 for her paper titled "Judicious Succession and Judicial Religion: Internal Conflict and Legal Dispute in Religious Reform Movement in India”

Prof. Anoop Singh,
Department of Industrial Management and Engineering, has authored a book titled "Inter-fuel Substitution, Industrial Energy Demand and Carbon Emissions" along with Prof. Kirit S Parikh, former Director, IGIDR (Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research), Mumbai and Prof. Jyoti Parikh, Executive Director, IRADe (Integrated Research and Action for Development). It has been published by VDM Verlag Publishers, Germany.

Prof. S. N. Singh, Department of Electrical Engineering has authored a book titled "Basic Electrical Engineering". It has been published by PHI Learning Pvt Ltd, India.

Prof. Saumyen Guha and Prof. Rajesh Srivastava, Department of Civil Engineering have authored a book titled, "Numerical Methods for Engineering and Science". It has been published by Oxford University Press, New Delhi under Oxford Higher Education Series.

Distinguished Lecture

Dr. George T. Schmidt gave two lectures on 31st October 2010 under the IEEE distinguished Lecture. The first lecture was titled, “Inertial System and Global Positioning System Technology Trends” and the second lecture was titled, “Inertial Navigation Systems and Global Positioning System Integration: Architectures and Performance Comparisons”. George T. Schmidt is a Distinguished Lecturer for the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) Aerospace and Electronic Systems Society. He is also a Lecturer in Aeronautics and Astronautics at the Massachusetts Institute of technology (MIT) and an industry consultant in guidance, navigation, and control. He is currently Director of the NATO Research and Technology Agency (RTO) Lecture Series on Low Cost Navigation Sensors and Integration Technology.

Antaragni 2010 - The Fire Within


Antaragini 2010 - The Fire Within:
The annual three-day cultural festival of IIT Kanpur began from 21st October, 2010. The fest was inaugurated by film director Mahesh Bhatt and IITK Director Prof. Sanjay G. Dhande. Over 1,500 students from 80 educational institutes across the country participated in the festival this year. This year's theme was 'Indian cinema' focusing on vivid facets of Indian cinema. Eminent personalities from the Indian Film industry like Mahesh Bhatt, Saurabh Shukla, Sekhar Kamulla, Vasundhara Das etc. graced the occasion. Antaragni had something to cater to everybody's tastes: be it cultural competitions, rock shows and contests, or enlightening panel discussions, talks and workshops, personality contests, or fashion shows and discotheque. Competitions were held in eight categories- Dance, Dramatics, Musicals, nglish Literary, Hindi Literary, Films and Photography and Quiz. This year Ritambhara was transformed into a full-fledged fashion fiesta. Under 'India Inspired' a panel discussion on 'The Cinema vs. The Viewer' was organized. For the first time, students held the unique event called 'Model United Nations' conference. The conference aimed at enabling its participants to emerge as global citizens and look at global problems from a different perspective. The rock show was headlined by the band Theme Clones, while the Professional Show witnessed an amazing performance by Pakistani singer Shafqat Amanat Ali.

 

Udgosh - Inter College Sports Festival


Udgosh, the annual inter college sports festival, of IIT Kanpur was held from 16th to 19th September, 2010. The event witnessed participation from over 20 colleges from all over the country competing in Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Chess, Cricket, Football, Hockey, Squash, Table Tennis, Taekwondo, Tennis, Volleyball and Weightlifting. Besides, there were many informal events like Motivational Talks, Gymnastic Shows, Sport Quizzes, screening of movies and live matches. The four-day event gave an opportunity to students to showcase their sporting talents, and compete against some of the best teams from across the nation. IIT Kanpur was the champion of the sports event with 8 gold medals, 4 silver medals and 3 bronze medals.
