Fused Deposition Modeling or FDM is a process which deposits a continuous filament of a thermoplastic polymer through a resistively heated nozzle, the material is delivered as a wire in to the extrusion head and heated to slightly above its flow point, so that it solidifies relatively quickly after it exits the nozzle.

KanGAL is equipped with state of the art computing facilities to help students and researchers perform computationally expensive simulations. KanGAL houses two clusters and several workstations to augment cutting-edge research in the field of genetic algorithms and engineering optimization problems. Following are the machines that are at present housed at KanGAL:


  • A 36 node PC based cluster: Each node is a P4 3.0 GHz machine with the following specs: D865GBF Motherboard (800 MHz FSB), P-4 3.0 GHz, 90nm marchitecture, 1MB L2 Cache (Prescott Core), 1GB DDR2 RAM (533MHz FSB), 80GB 7200.7 RPM SATA Drive on each node. The cluster uses gigabit cards and wires to connect the nodes. The system runs on Gentoo Linux.

  • An 18 node PC based cluster: Each node is a dual processor P3 1.0 GHz machine with the following specs: 256MB RAM per node, 100Mbps network bandwidth. The system runs on RedHat Linux 9.0.


  • There are about a dozen desktops with the configuration in the range: P4 (2.4 - 3.2) GHz, 512 MB - 1GB DDR2 RAM, 80 GB 7200.7 RPM SATA HD, 17-19 inch CRT Monitor (running Mandriva Linux).

  • A Central File Server with 160x3 = 480 GB data storage space (running Mandriva Linux).

  • Few old machines that work as routers, NIS servers (running FreeBSD) and test boxes. Two PCs (P4 3.0 GHZ, 1GB RAM, 800MHz FSB) running WindowsXP.
