Welcome to IIT Kanpur

Institute of Technology Kanpur is situated in the western part of Kanpur city. It is a serene and wooded campus housing academic as well as residential places for students, staffs and faculty. Nestling on the banks of the eternal Ganga, Kanpur stands as one of North India's major industrial centers with its own historical, religious and commercial importance. Nearest airport is Chaudhary Charan Singh Airport, Amausi, Lucknow, 90 kms from the IIT Kanpur campus. It takes about one and half hours of drive to reach the campus. Kanpur is connected to all the major railway stations of the country by express, super-fast and passenger trains. Kanpur is connected by road with all the major cities of the country. It is situated on National Highway No. 2 on the Delhi-Agra-Allahabad-Calcutta route and on National Highway No. 25 on the Lucknow-Jhansi-Shivpuri route. Kanpur experiences a typical version of a humid subtropical climate that resembles the climate of Delhi to some degree. Best time to visit Kanpur is either October-November or February-March. The city of Kanpur attracts tourists for its age old monuments and varied other constructions, which reflect the history of the place. Besides that, this city of Uttar Pradesh houses many parks, gardens, water bodies and religious places of visit. Some of them are Kanpur Memorial Church, Nana Rao Park, J.K.Temple, Moti Jheel, Allen Forest Zoo, Dwarakadhish Temple, Kamla Retreat, Jain Glass Temple, Massacre Ghat.


About MSE IIT Kanpur

The Department of Materials Science & Engineering established in the year 1960, is ranked among the nation's top schools in Materials Science and Engineering. Earlier known as Materials and Metallurgical Engineering at IIT Kanpur, the department since its inception has placed very strong emphasis on educating and nurturing young minds to impart quality education with strong fundamentals by offering an interdisciplinary curriculum. With cutting edge research in diverse facets of materials science, the department is endowed with a highly competent undergraduate program, a dynamic graduate program and distinguished faculty. The alumni network of the department spans across the national and international horizons comprising of remarkably skilled and knowledgeable individuals.


About Prof. Dipak Mazumdar

Professor Dipak Mazumdar, born on 11th December 1957, graduated in Metallurgical Engineering from Regional Institute of Technology (now NIT), Jamshedpur in 1980, received his Master degree in 1982 from Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, and a Ph.D. in Process Metallurgy from McGill University in 1985 with honors. He returned to India in early 1987 and has been teaching and conducting research on steelmaking at IIT Kanpur for over three decades and a half. He was the chairman of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering during 2009-2011 and held two, prestigious Chair Professorship, INAE Chair Professor and Ministry of Steel Chair Professor during 2012-2013 and 2013-2017 respectively.

He has coauthored two textbooks, five review papers and over one hundred seventy scientific articles in peer reviewed journals and conference proceedings. A Fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineering (INAE) as well as the Indian Institute of Metals (IIM), Professor Mazumdar is the recipient of fourteen national and international awards, including Distinguished Educator/Teacher award from the INAE and the IIM as well as Excellence in Teaching award from IIT Kanpur. A teacher par excellence, Professor Mazumdar also works as a consultant for several steel and refractory industries in India.
