The Laser Matter Interaction is a wide research area which has seen a significant development in the recent decades. Several terms and concepts are to be clarified to take research/study in this field. This course covers the fundamental principles and physical phenomena governing laser-based fabrication/machining processes and their existing and potential applications. The course is expected to provide the participants, a link between advanced materials and advanced manufacturing techniques. It connects physical science and engineering aspects together. Laser machining is an emerging area in various applications ranging from bulk machining in metal forming to micromachining and micro-structuring in electronics and biomedical applications. Additive Manufacturing processes involving laser, such as stereolithography, selective laser sintering, are also part of this course, in order to give the application and product manufacturing flavour.
