Turbocharged SUV Engine Test Cell

Engine Research Laboratory has a Turbocharged CRDI Engine Test Cell of SUV Tata Safari DICOR 2.2 L, which is EURO IV compatible diesel engine. This test cell is used for comprehensive investigations of effect of fossil fuels as well as biofuels on the engine performance, emissions and combustion characteristics in addition to studies of long-term engine durability and lubricating oil degradation. The engine is coupled with an eddy current dynamometer (Dynomerk: EC300) for controlling the engine speed and load.

  • Centralized injectors.

  • ECU controlled fuel injection system.

  • Higher injection pressure (1600 bar).

  • Variable Nozzle Turbine (VNT) turbocharger.

  • Gallery cooled pistons.

  • Hydraulic lash adjusters and roller followers for maintenance-free quiet operation and reduced friction.

  • The engine breather/ oil separator, to eliminate the engine blow-by being emitted to atmosphere.

  • The DICOR engine uses DELPHI high-pressure pump and a common rail for supplying the cylinders with high pressure fuel through ECU controlled fuel injectors.

  • Common–rail is key to better fuel engine performance, since more accurate high pressure injection results in more efficient combustion.

  • SAFARI DICOR has “Drive-by-wire” technology, where-in Driver demand translation is done by the ECU.

  • ECU commands the injectors for pilot injection, which helps reduce instantaneous combustion, thus reducing traditional diesel ‘Knock’.

  • As a consequence, DICOR engine has far less noise, vibration and harshness, which is conventionally associated with DI diesel engines.

  • SAFARI DICOR is equipped with fuel filter and water separator (Sedimenter with water sensor) designed to filter out external particles and separate water from the fuel.

  • EGR system to tap a part of exhaust gas and mix with intake air at part load conditions thus reducing the harmful NOX pollutants.

  • EGR quantity and its duration are controlled by ECU instantaneously, based on environmental as well as engine conditions.

  • Close coupled catalytic converter (CCC) fitted with diesel oxidation catalytic (DOC) converter to reduce exhaust emissions (CO, NOX, HC and PM).

  •  CCC quickly heats up after start of the engine, to ensure that it operate correctly during the engine warm-up phase.

  • These features of engine components and after-treatment technology make this engine EURO IV compatible.

This facility is useful for the comprehensive investigations for effect of fossil fuels as well as biofuels for engine performance, long-term engine durability and lubricating oil degradation.
