The Mathematical Theory of Communication by Claude Shannon: This is the magna carta of the information age. Every computer built, email sent, and video streamed bears a debt to Claude Shannon. Just as physicists subjected the sway of a pendulum and the orbits of the planets to the same laws, Claude Shannon made our world possible by getting at the essence of information. That ability to decompose something down to its basics is a lesson that has stayed with me whether I look at the fundamentals of a complex business like IBM or solve a deep technological problem.
