The Batch of 1965 (Class of 1970) wants to establish four scholarships for the undergraduate students (B.Tech. program) of IIT Kanpur with an endowment fund of Rs 1 Cr. The endowment fund is being created in perpetuity with a vision to award four student scholarships every year.

“It was July of 1965, when almost 300 of us arrived on the IIT Kanpur campus. At the time, the campus itself was evolving rapidly with the first batch having just graduated. We were the first occupants of the newly built Hall-3. We came from widely diverse backgrounds. Some were from affluent households, but most of us came from modest backgrounds that would hardly qualify as middle class by today’s standards. IIT Kanpur was a game-changer for us. We all had come to learn “engineering”, but little did we know that those formative five years would establish a life-long bond between us and the institute. The wide variety of areas from economics to social science to psychology to philosophy that we were exposed to, was not restricted to science and technology. The teachings at the institute opened up our horizons and contributed tremendously to our knowledge. The holistic approach learned during the course of our stay prepared us to confidently face any situation that we were likely to encounter as new graduates. The concepts acquired during the course of our studies also inspired many of us to take up careers in research and academic areas across the globe.

We shall always remain indebted to the institute for enabling us to pursue our dreams and giving us the tools to do so. We would like other deserving students to have the same opportunity to reach their full potential. To this end, we want to establish four scholarships for the engineering students of IIT Kanpur with an endowment fund of Rs 50 lacs. We humbly request you to accept the same as “Gurudakshina” from the Batch of 1965.”

Scholarships for IITK students

Education is the most wonderful and everlasting gift, and a student scholarship provides a meaningful way for alumni to give back to their institution for the betterment of future generations of students. Cost of education has always been an important concern for our students. Apart from tuition fees, students also need to plan for their other expenses like boarding & lodging, books & supplies, health insurance, transportation etc. Hence, it is imperative to understand the financial aspects of higher education. MHRD has increased the tuition fees of UG students to Rs. 2 lakhs per year from academic year 2016-17 and hence our Institute has been trying to provide partial and full student scholarship support and merit awards to students who are not eligible for government scholarships. The student scholarships at IIT Kanpur are aimed at enabling needy and meritorious students to excel in their academic endeavours and turn their aspirations into a reality. Scholarships have unique benefits and are the most desirable form of financial aid.

Eligibility Criteria for Batch of 1965 Scholarship

  • To be awarded to UG students of 4-year B.Tech program based on merit cum means (CPI above 6.5 and family income till 9.0 lacs) and participation in extra-curricular activities.
  • One scholarship of Rs 50,000 to Rs 100,000 to be earmarked for each year (i.e., 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th year students). A student selected in any year continues to get the scholarship unless he/she fails to meet any of criteria.
  • It is desirable to spread the scholarships evenly among all engineering disciplines but, meeting the eligibility criteria must be the foremost consideration in selecting awardees. However, no more than one scholarship should be awarded in any discipline among students from the same batch.
  • The Scholarship granted to the student in the first year based on merit cum means (AIR score and family income till 9.0 lacs). It may be continued till the end of his B Tech program subject to the student maintaining a minimum CPI of 6.5 and good conduct.
