Prof. U.B. Tewari (Maths/PhD/1964), popularly known as UBT, did his bachelor and master's degree from Lucknow University, he joined IIT Kanpur in 1964, as a Ph.D. student and then later moved to University of California Berkeley for a Ph.D in 1967. At Berkeley he worked with a Professor Henry Helson, a leading figure in Harmonic Analysis, and obtained the degree in the year 1969. After his Ph.D he moved to Institut Mittag-Leffler, Dijursholm, Sweden for a year (1969-1970). He chose to work at IIT Kanpur as a faculty member in the year 1970 and became a full professor at a young age of 37 and remained there till 2009.

Prof. Tewari’s passion for mathematics was instrumental in making IIT Kanpur Mathematics Department a prominent place in the field of mathematics, and in analysis particularly. As a consequence, IIT Kanpur has produced many brilliant mathematicians. Through his inspiring and rigorous teaching, he made many difficult books and concepts easy to understand for generations of mathematicians trained at IIT Kanpur. Most of his students owe their solid foundation of mathematics to him.

He was the recipient of many prestigious awards like, Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize, Meghnad Saha Award for Research in Theoretical Sciences and Fellow, National Academy of Sciences, Allahabad.

To carry on Professor U B Tewari's legacy of promoting excellence in research and teaching in Mathematics, we at IIT Kanpur plan to establish three programs in his memory. We urge you to contribute generously and help us to institute these programs.

Distinguished Lecture Series in Mathematics (already instituted)

Every year an eminent mathematician will be invited to give a short course of 4-5 lectures, spread over two weeks, in a forefront research topic from diverse areas of mathematics. Some of the graduate students may be assigned the job of taking lecture notes which may be later on expanded by the speaker for publication in a prestigious lecture series. This short course is expected to cater to a wide range of researchers and graduate students in terms of exposure for understanding the broad view of the topic and for encouraging cutting-edge research on related challenging problems. The funds will be utilized towards travel expenses, honorarium, boarding and lodging of the speaker.

1. Student Travel Fellowship (to be instituted)

For participation in prominent international conferences, workshops or schools, annually, two competitive travel fellowships will be awarded to students in advanced stages of their PhD program at the Department of Mathematics & Statistics, IIT Kanpur. This initiative will promote academic excellence and facilitate gaining international exposure to students on contemporary research topics. Funds will be utilized towards travel expenses, registration fees, boarding and lodging of selected fellows.

2. Breaking Area Lecture Series (to be instituted)

A mini lecture series of 4-5 state-of-the-art lectures on an emerging and hot research topic will be conducted by a mathematician of an international standing. The lecture series will have 4-5 lectures spread over a week with each lecture followed by an extensive discussion session. The emphasis will be on the crux of the idea, its relevance and relation to other contemporary topics. Possibility of publishing lecture notes based on the lecture series will also be explored. The interactions and discussions during the event are expected to promote scholarship and provide new research directions in the department. The funds will be utilized towards travel, honorarium, boarding and lodging expenses of the invitee.
