An owlet, too weak to fly, lay beneath the tree from which it had fallen. A few IIT Kanpur students stopped, gently cared for the injured bird, and nursed it back to health until it was ready to be released safely into its natural habitat.

This is not an isolated story.

Across the IIT Kanpur campus, acts of compassion unfold quietly every day; a roadside turtle carried to safety during the monsoon, a bull rescued and treated during the harsh winter months, injured birds provided timely care, and orphaned puppies nurtured until they found loving homes. Behind every rescue is a student who simply chose not to look away. Spread across more than 1200 acres, the IIT Kanpur campus is home to a rich diversity of fauna, birds, mammals, reptiles, and stray animals. Caring for this shared ecosystem reflects the Institute's commitment to compassion, environmental stewardship, and responsible community engagement. With a deep sense of giving back to our alma mater, IIT Kanpur is establishing the Animal Allies Wing under the Community Welfare Cell a structured, student-led initiative dedicated to strengthening and sustaining animal welfare on campus.

While the Institute Animal Welfare Cell coordinates vaccination and sterilisation drives, much of the day-to-day work of rescue, emergency response, treatment, rehabilitation, and adoption continue to depend on dedicated student volunteers. Their commitment has saved many animal lives, but these efforts largely rely on informal networks and personal experience. We have handled 300+ cases since 2024, when formal documentation of these cases began.

As each graduating batch leaves, valuable knowledge and experience leave with them. New volunteers often learn through experience rather than structured training, and support for emergency veterinary care and rehabilitation remains limited. The compassion has always been present; what is needed now is a sustainable system that ensures this care continues for years to come.

The Animal Allies Wing seeks to bridge this gap by:

• Coordinating campus rescue operations in collaboration with trusted local animal welfare organisations.
• Training and mentoring student volunteers in safe animal handling and emergency response, ensuring that knowledge is passed on from one generation of students to the next.
• Supporting emergency veterinary treatment, medicines, vaccinations, rehabilitation, and essential rescue resources for injured and sick animals.
• Organising awareness programmes and adoption drives to foster a more compassionate and responsible campus community.
• Organising programmes and events related to biodiversity conservation within campus area, in consultation with experts in the field.
