Central Research Facilities

Creating shared infrastructure for advanced discovery

Breakthrough research increasingly depends on access to highly specialised facilities for fabrication, imaging, spectroscopy and performance testing.

IIT Kanpur’s proposed Central Research Facilities will bring these capabilities together within a shared scientific ecosystem. The initiative will support researchers working across semiconductors, advanced materials, quantum technologies, energy, healthcare, electronics and other emerging fields.

By creating common access to sophisticated equipment and technical expertise, the facilities will enable researchers to move more efficiently from material development and device fabrication to detailed analysis, validation and application.

Enabling research across the complete development cycle

Advanced research rarely depends on a single instrument.

A new material may need to be fabricated, processed, imaged and tested before its potential can be understood. A semiconductor device may require controlled cleanroom conditions, thin-film growth, precision patterning and metrology.
A scientific discovery may need multiple forms of structural, compositional, magnetic, optical and mechanical analysis before it can progress towards a functional technology.

The Central Research Facilities will connect these stages within one integrated platform.

This shared model will reduce infrastructure duplication, strengthen interdisciplinary collaboration and give faculty, students and research teams access to capabilities that would be difficult to establish within individual departments.

About the Central Research
Facilities

The initiative brings together six
specialised centres:

01. Semiconductor and Device Processing Center

A shared platform for cleanroom-based research, thin-film growth, patterning, lithography, fabrication, metrology and device processing.

02. Advanced Materials Fabrication Center

Facilities for developing and processing advanced materials through laser-based techniques, single-crystal growth and 3D printing.

03. Advanced Structural Characterization and Spectroscopy Center

Specialised capabilities for analysing the structural, molecular, compositional and electronic properties of materials.

04. Advanced Microscopy Center

High-resolution imaging infrastructure, including X-ray, cryogenic, magnetic, confocal and surface microscopy, to study materials and biological systems across multiple scales.

05. Device Characterization Center

Facilities for evaluating magnetic, functional, thermal and optical behaviour, helping researchers understand how materials and devices perform under different conditions.

06. Mechanical Characterization Center

Advanced infrastructure for testing strength, durability, deformation and mechanical performance.
